Kaytrin arrived at Camp Halfblood late in the day, almost time for the dinner horn to blow. She came across the boarder, but she wasn't in a hurry. she wasn't being chased by monsters, or following a satyr. No, she literally just walked in. A few campers ran up the hill to meet her, and to escort her to the Big house to meet Chiron.
She didn't talk much, but she didn't seem shy, or scared of Camp Halfblood either, like most demigods when they first arrive.
She talked briefly with Chiron after the orientation film, and he nodded, obviously pleased, to the campers who had escorted her.
The dinner bell then rang, and she and all of the campers, headed up to the pavilion for dinner. She was allowed to sit at the Hermes table because she hadn't been claimed yet. When everyone went up the fire pit, Kaytrin saw everyone dropping bits of their food into the fire, so she followed their lead.
"You are very observant," a girl with long, curly blonde hair and strikingly grey eyes said. Next to her was a boy with messy black hair and sea green eyes, who was holding the blonde girl's hand. The boy had a odd tattoo on his forearm. Both of them were a few year older than Kaytrin.
"Chiron told me the same thing," Kaytrin replied. Then, with a slight smile she said, "My name is Kaytrin."
"Annabeth. And this is Percy," Annabeth said, returning the smile.
"Nice to meet you," Percy said. "How old are you?"
"Fourteen," Kaytrin replied. "May I ask why?"
"The gods are supposed to claim their children by their thirteenth birthday. I guess you will be claimed at the campfire tonight."
Annabeth nodded reassuringly.
"Ok, so the Greek god do exist. I had a hunch. Ok. Well, thanks for talking to me. Uh, see you guys later, I guess," Kaytrin said with a smile as she started walking back towards the Hermes table.
She scooted back into her seat when she noticed everyone from her table looking at her.
"What?" She asked.
"Nothing, nothing," everyone murmured.
"No, I want to know what you were staring at."
"You," one little boy whispered very softly from the other end of the table.
It was amazing that she could hear him, with the little boy being so far away from her.
"Why were you staring at me?" Kaytrin asked, with a slight frown on her face.
A different boy spoke up this time.
"Because you look so beautiful when you smile. You looked distant and alien when you first arrived."
"Doesn't everyone?"
The same boy ignored her question and kept talking.
"You also talked to Annabeth Chase and Percy Jackson, the two most popular people at this camp. Nobody does that on their first day here."
"And how was I supposed to know that they were popular?"
"Leave the pretty girl alone," a new voice said.
Kaytrin turned to see a boy with beautiful reddish-brown hair and amber eyes behind her.
"And who might you be?" Kaytrin said with a steely expression in her greenish golden eyes. She obviously did not like being called a "pretty girl" by someone she didn't even know.
The boy looked surprised, like he is not used to being given that expression.
"I am London Westerfeld, at your service," He said, then bowed. A few girls giggled around her. He looked to be about fourteen years old.
Everyone around her started getting up to go to the campfire. A relieved expression flashed across Kaytrin's face briefly as she followed the Hermes cabin.
"Hey, blonde new girl, wait up!" London called to her.
She darted in front of a few people, and managed to lose London in the crowd. Kaytrin followed a few people she recognized in Hermes cabin to the campfire, and sat next to them.
After everyone got settled in and sang a few campfire songs led by the Apollo cabin, Chiron banged his hoof on the stones on the ground.
"We have a new camper! Her name is Kaytrin Stynely. Kaytrin, please stand up." Kaytrin did as Chiron directed, then Chiron continued his speech. "Kaytrin, your godly parent should claim you sometime during today, or possibly tomorrow. Thank you, you are all dismissed."
Everyone got up to go back to their cabin, but Kaytrin headed down toward Chiron. Barely anyone was left in the campfire area.
"Chiron, demigods are supposed to have only one mortal parent, right?"
"Yes, my child. Why do you ask?"
"Well, I have two mortal parents."
"Then you are not related to one of them."
"Okay...."
"I know, it is confusing coming here and learning that the gods exist. You will get used to it. You should get back to your cabin before lights out."
Kaytrin nodded, and headed back to the Hermes cabin.
