Kaytrin and Sam met London in the hall, and together descended down the stairs.

As they turned the corner, a voice said, "Where are you three going?"

They stopped, because London's mother was in front of them.

"Mother, I told you yesterday that we would be leaving," London said.

"But you can't leave this early!" His mom said.

"Yes, we can."

"But you know what is happening right now, don't you? You remember, right?"

Sam, Kaytrin, and London all dashed around London's mom. She tried to grab Kaytrin, but Kaytrin slashed her celestial bronze spear through her. Because she was mortal, it didn't harm her at all, but she was startled. It gave Kaytrin enough time to leap out the door, slamming it behind her.

Kaytrin whirled around, expecting to be attacked by the monsters London was talking about. Nothing moved. Sam and London were a few yards away, examining everything carefully, looking for It.

Kaytrin's heart pinched slightly at seeing them together. She wanted to be the one next to London. Sam just met him, anyway.

Kaytrin shook her head, abandoning her jealousy. She needed to look out for the—
