When they arrived at London's house, no, his mansion, London hurried them through the front yard, and quickly unlocked the front door. The inside of the home was bright and cheery, but London's glum attitude dampened the happiness.
A woman with light brown hair stepped out of a doorway.
"London?" She said, surprised.
"Mom," he agreed.
A big smile stretched across his mom's face, but it never made it to her eyes. Her eyes remained a cold, hard icy blue.
Sam took a slight step back. She looked hesitant to get any nearer to London's mother.
Kaytrin nudged London, prompting him to tell his mom why they were there.
"We are going to stay here for a few hours to rest, and then we will leave," He said.
"It's very late," she checked her watch, "eleven o'clock. But okay, you can stay." His mom said, eyeing the spear on Kaytrin's back, the daggers sheathed in Sam's belt, and London's lyre and sword hanging by his side. "You may stay in the guest rooms, girls."
They all trooped upstairs, to pick a bedroom.
As they all got settled in for the night, London told them that breakfast would be outside their doors when they woke up, and they would meet in the hallway by ten in the morning.
Sam insisted on sharing a room with Kaytrin, but she wouldn't say why. Kaytrin suspected that she was unnerved by London's mother. Kaytrin understood, and was a little bit glad that she would be near her. She didn't trust London's mom.
Kaytrin fell asleep that night to the sound of Sam's quiet breathing, and crickets outside chirping.
