Broken Clockwork

Len took a sip of his evening coffee in which the presence of warmth has left quite a long time ago. He gave an unsatisfied look at the paper cup and threw it in the nearest bin he could find together with its contents.

‘Life never gives everything we want.’ Len would say to himself quite often. He feels like he ages more than he is at twenty-two.

He stared at the wildly blinking police lights and flashing cameras with a sigh. Blood was spilled on the newly repaired asphalt road from the cold body of the victim of yet another road accident. The body was covered with white linen soaked with the crimson liquid. Locals were fanning the tear stained hyperventilating old lady near the police mobile. Inspectors and police officers talking amongst themselves in a hushed tone as they analyzed the accident scene.

Len turned around and slowly walks away from the scene he is very familiar with.

“Yowane Haku”

Age: 30

Cause of Death: Fatal head injury, massive bleeding, numerous bone fractures

The victim died after her car’s breaks malfunctioned and caused it to spin uncontrollably before hitting an electric post. The post fell on her car causing her car and her body to be squished by the heavy concrete post.

Gruesome?

Yes.

How did he know all this?

He saw it happen.

How did he see it happen?

Simple. He could go back in time.

The condition: He does not decide when to time travel. Time goes back on itself. He lives his days like a normal person. However, every time that he experiences someone close to him die, he would relive the previous week before the ‘target’ dies. If he does not manage to make the victim happy before their ‘deathday’, he would be forced to relive the week again. He likes to call that time a 'death loop'.  Because it's like a time loop,  but it only happens when someone dies,  hence 'death loop'.

No one told him the rules. He learned them all by himself. And he learned that the hard way when his cousin Lenka and her best friend, Miku, died in an elevator when he was thirteen. They were on the way to his house from their work when elevator’s conveyor belt snapped and they fell twenty floors down.

A week before that, the two best friends died in a bank robbery situation. The thief shot them dead when they refused to comply to his demands. Miku blocked the first bullet that was supposed to shoot Lenka by facing her back towards the robber. Lenka was shot afterwards.

Len spent the whole week trying to save them by dealing with the robber and his lackeys. However, Lenka and Miku died in a different way. Their bank got burned down. They were the only ones who did not survive.

Out of desperation he told them that they are going to die. They after two days after in that elevator.

He lost hope of ever saving them from their unalterable fate. He accepted the fact that they are supposed to die and then he cut contact with them until they died. He thought it was over. But he relived the week again.

Now, instead of trying to save or distance himself from the targets, Len made the best out of the time they had left and bonded with them. They died in the same bank robbery scene and did not come back again.
