I awoke to my wife who was shaking me. I looked around the cabin to see the girls gave to bed, on account of their absence in the parlor. I looked down to see my empty scotch glass still in my hand. I popped my neck back, regretting falling asleep in the stiff chair.
"Something is tapping on the porch." My wife whispered.
I listened closely for the tapping, and, sure enough, I heard it. I grabbed my axe and lit the lantern. I opened the door expecting some sort of wildlife vermin, but instead found a boy about 10 years old.
The young boy stared at me, fear evident on his face, before bolting away in the other direction. I followed close behind through shallow brush. The kid was losing me, but I heard him fall. I pinned him to the ground in rage, wanting to know the reason for this drama.
"Why were you tapping on my porch?" I ask sternly.
"My uncles told me to..." He stammered.
I was confused, but something in me told me to expect the worst.
"Why?" I ask.
"To get you out of the cabin."
