The Blair Witch Project is probably the most profitable of the Hollywood movie franchise– seriously. With measly funds of $60,000 (some reports stating lower) and taking in a whopping $250 million. The secrets to the film came with a price, however:
The cast was, slightly, tortured. To make the movie more successful and more realistic, the directors told the actors hired that the story of Blair Witch was an actual urban legend. They spent all eight days of film in fear, believing they were really experiencing a haunting. Oh, but the "safe word" was taco!
Some of the scariest scenes, such as the ones where the tent is shaken and the children laughing, were planned by the directors. They didn't let the cast know, wanting their reactions to be as authentic as possible.
The cast wasn't aware often times about the other character's goals, or instructions. The movie was really improvised, with a few instructions for the day and no script. When one of the cast members went missing, totally on accident, as someone else was to go missing in the scene, none of the other actors knew about it.
The cast was also given less and less food each day. This heightened their irritability and created more tension. Obviously, the entire process sounded uncomfortable.
So while the cast wasn't physically harmed, they got the scare of their lives and went on a secret diet. If any of you are aspiring actors, might I recommend Blair Witch Remake #2? Definitely would test strength.
