37 ~ The Back Door

When 15-year-old Shea arrived home just after midnight, her parents had already gone to bed. She decided to leave the door unlock because her brother was sleeping over at a friend's house. She never knew if he'd have to come home.

Big mistake.

In the middle of the night, after going to bed, Shea was awoken by something cold and metallic pressing up against her neck. At first she believed it was her brother trying to scare her. The room was very dark, so she couldn't see who it was.

Then, a big, hairy hand covered both her nose and mouth. She couldn't breathe. She heard a deep, rasping voice say, "If you make any noise, I'll kill you."

As Shea's eyes adjusted to the darkness, she could make out the figure of a man leaning over her. There was no face– just a black mask, with holes cut out for eyes. The man was pressing a knife against her neck.

Knowing her parents were asleep in the room right next to hers, she began to make as much noise as she could. However, her screams and cries were covered by the man's hand. She kicked her legs against the wall, hoping to wake up her parents.

In the next room, the parents were fast asleep. Suddenly, some strange noises woke them up. They decided to check on their daughter, thinking she was just having a bad dream.

When the girl's parents opened the bedroom door, they were met with a horrifying scene. All they could see was a big, black silhouette standing over their daughter while holding a knife to her throat.

As soon as he saw the knife, Shea's father attacked the intruder and struggled with him. Her mother wrestled the man's wrists and got the knife out of his clutches. The father managed to get the intruder in a choke hold, and began to tighten his arm around his neck.

The girl grabbed her cellphone off her bedside table and ran outside to call 911. Her parents kept the intruder pinned to the floor until the police arrived four minutes later.

The bedroom door burst open, and a police officer ran in yielding a gun. "Don't move or I'll blow your head off!" The policeman shouted. The policeman threw handcuffs on the intruder and dragged him outside.

When the police searched the man's truck, they found a variety of weapons and bloody clothing. It turned out that the masked man had already killed two people a few nights earlier.

The scariest thing about this story os that it's true. The girl's name is Shea McDonagh. The killer's name is Adam Leroy Lane. He'll be spending the next 25-30 years in prison.

So the moral of the story is: Always check to make sure your backdoor is locked. You don't want to be the victim of an intruder.
