Ruby
I woke up in my room, groaning initially I looked at my clock; 2:30 am. Hearing something fall I snapped my head to where the sound came from the picture frame.
I sighed, slowly picking it up. I sat up, rubbing my face and bunned my hair up. I sat on the edge of the bed, contemplating whether I should have a shower or get a drink? I'll go with the latter.
Groaning again, but then quickly realising I wasn't alone in this house, I trudged my way down the stairs making it as silent as I possibly can. Missing the last step, I managed to fall but biting my lip drawing a bid of blood, making sure I don't cry out.
"Fuck..." I whispered, grabbing onto the banister to help me up off the wooden flooring.
Sloppily I dragged my feet along the floor and to kitchen, I squinted my eyes patting the walls trying to find the switch, "God, where is it?" I was beginning to get frustrated.
Making up my mind, I thought I don't need the light. I walked over to the fridge, but instantly falling over again – this time it is something hard, and it made a noise.
My heart started to pick up the pace, I quickly stood up and hit something on the way up – the switch!
With a sudden flash of light, I shielded my eyes, hissing out. After a while I removed my arm getting use to the light, I looked down at what I tripped over. "Mom?"
I rushed over, "Mom?" Panic soon rushed through me, "Mom? Come on mom wake up!" I shook her, but this time no response. "Mom!"
I rolled her onto her back, only to see a glass bottle of Jack Daniels laying next to her, empty.
I hugged her, "Oh god mom, why?" As I laid on her chest I realised that I couldn't hear breathing, my eyes widened, and I rushed to the phone dialling 911.
Just as quickly as I dialled they answered. "Hello? What is your emergency?"
"My...Mom...Sh-she, she is passed out on the floor, but there is no response coming from her. I-I don't...don't know what to do?" I bit my fingernails.
"Right, ma'am what is your address and I will send a rapid response over to you."
I closed my eyes, "11 Colonial Drive, Westcoast."
I waited for a response, but it went silent. "Hello?"
"Sorry ma'am, I will send a response vehicle now." I started to panic more, "Wh-what do I do?"
"Breathe, is she moving at all?" I turned to my mom, "No."
"Is she on her side?" I shook my head only to realise the operator wouldn't be able to see me, "No."
"Okay, for now set her on her side and then see if she responds to that." And that's what I did, I settled her on her side and see if she responded but still no sign.
"No... Mom come on please. I cant loose you too." I whispered into her hair. The sound of padded feet made their way to me and a loud gasp came through the air, I shot my head "Mrs. Jackson?!"
"What happened?" I closed my eyes, "She drank." There was nothing more nor less to it.
Before she could open her mouth, a loud banging came from the door, "I'll get it, you stay with her." I nodded, soon enough a bunch of padded feet vibrated through the floorboards.
"Ma'am your going to have to move back." I was pulled away from my mom whilst they started injecting liquids into her arms and connect wires to her – which basically sent her into overdrive.
She started to shake, "Wh-what's happening?!" But no response, only between them. "Hey!"
I went to grab one of them, but they got and took my mom away on a gurney. "NO! What is going on?" But still nothing. I ran after them, but it was too late when the ambulance door slammed in my face and they drove off.
I dropped to my knees, "No..." Mrs. Jackson wrapped her arms around me bringing me into a tight hug, "I can't lose her too."
"I know dear, I know."
~~~
We were waiting in the waiting area, I kept looking at the clock only to see; 3:00 am.
I couldn't sleep now, so Mrs. Jackson went to get me a snack and a drink.
"Here." She handed the food to me. "Thank you." But I put it onto the floor, she gripped my hand squeezing it every now and then.
She turned to me, "Dear, may I ask something?" I nodded, "Why? Why do you care what happens to your mother?"
I gasped, how could she ask me something like that!
"Mrs. Jackson, I get it. Like I really do get it, but you see she is my mother. The woman who gave birth to me, the woman who loved me. The woman who gave everything to me. I can't just let that go – even if she changed heavily and turned into something no daughter would want, but she is still my mother. Who I love."
She nodded understandingly, "I'm sorry dear, I just don't understand how after all this time you can give love where it isn't received." That struck me.
Funny how that applies to both Lucas and my mother.
"How I can give love where it isn't received." Semi repeating her words, "I guess that is who I am. I've never been selfish."
"Exactly, you've been selfless. You take care of everyone around, but no one returns it. No one takes care of you – nor do you allow it." But before I could respond, Doctor Ronan came by.
"Miss. Jenson?" I stood up, "That's me." He pulled out a file, "It seems your mother received a serve alcohol poisoning. She is under medical care, but we will need to keep her in for check-ups."
"Miss. Jenson, may I ask how you think she received this excessive amount of alcoholism?" I swallowed that lump which was stuck in my throat.
"I-I... My father has recently passed, and...and it clearly has taken a toll on her. Effecting her mental state and physical." He nodded, "That's all, thank you Miss. Jenson." He smiled, walking away.
For once I haven't cried.
I sat back down sighing. "Honey, I promise it will get better." I shrugged, "Not sure if I want it too."
"How 'bout I'll cook you my infamous burger when we get home." Which reminds me.
"Do you know what happened to my bedroom?" She slumped her shoulders, "Your mother. She got angry, and the first place she went to was your room destroying every happy thing you had."
"So why did you ask, 'what happened'?" Confusion clearly threaded within my tone. "Because...because I didn't want you to be angry nor sad." I scoffed, "Too late for that." She nodded.
I started to yawn, "Come on I'll take you home." Without arguing I agreed and stood up, "How about you sleep in your mother's bed, and I'll tidy your room for you."
I shook my head, "It's okay, I promise you." She raised a brow, "Who's the adult here? Now do as I say and sleep in your mother's bed, don't worry your room will be spotless by the time your awake."
"I don't want to trouble you, you need your sleep." She shook her head, "It's fine dear, I need to clear my head too." I yawned whilst nodding my head.
We started walking out of the hospital, around 4 ish, but I bumped into someone.
"Hey!" I turned to see; "Lucas?"
He held a bouquet of roses.
"What are you doing here?" We both said in unison.
