Ruby

"Lucky... I-I ca-can't do this an-anymore." I hiccuped, "Yes Red you can, show them you are stronger than this. Show them the girl I fell in love with."

"God, I-I just miss hi-him so much. It hurts, almost like I can't bre-breathe." He pulled me into a hug rubbing my back.

Who knew that I would hurt as much as I did today?

We sat there for a while until we heard shouting; "Lucas? Ruby?!" I removed my head from his chest to see who this person was.

"Mrs. Layton." I whispered, I got up and walked towards her bringing her into a hug, "Oh!"

But she soon relaxed realising who it was, "Oh dear, I'm so sorry." I was a sniffling mess.

"What is go-going now?" She squeezed me, "Well... Your mother, she-she isn't happy." I cringed.

I sighed, "How far along is the service now?" She removes one of her arms to clearly check her watch, "Well we have a few more minutes until they bring him out for the ceremony to take place when we bury him."

I nodded, "Mom! Mom!" Out came a screeching Lia, "Baby! Calm down!" She hushed Lia, who immediately stopped.

But then turned her attention to me and sadness filled her face, tears willed up in her eyes, "Ruby?" She whispered, rushing to me.

"If I had only met you sooner, gosh I-I wis-"

"Hey it is okay Lia, there would have been nothing you could have done anyway." I hugged her.

"Baby?" I sniffled removing myself away from Lia, "Lucas?" He licked his lips, "I-I need to leave."

"What? Why?" I felt the tears willed up again, "I just... I can't do this either." With that he ran off. I blinked a few times as I watched his figure disappear into the distance.

What Ruby had failed to realise was Lucas went away to spend most of the evening having sex with someone else whilst she cried her eyes out wanting nothing more than her loving, caring boyfriend.

My chest rapidly moved up and down, my bottom lip slightly quivered. My hands drop to my side. "He left me."

"He left me all alone when I needed him here the most!" I closed my eyes feeling the tears slip. I bowed my head, only to feel multiple arms wrap around me and move me in  another direction.

I sat far back away from the crowd. I couldn't stand there with everyone whilst they lowered my father. I stood next to a gravestone about 10 feet away.

"You alright?"  I turned my head slowly, "Cameron?" Shock fulfilled my body.

"Wh-what the hell are you doing here? And where the hell have you been?" I hissed. "I-i heard from someone, they told me to check up on you. And from our argument of sorts I have just stayed clear."

"Why? Why now?" I shook my head, "You need to leave."

"I can't do that." I furrowed my brows, "And why not."

"Because Lucas told me not too." My heart fell. "Well you don't have to worry about me I am fine. Now leave." I turned my back on him. "Hey! Hey I didn't have to do this but I did."

"Yeah exactly so don't." I walked away from him, luckily for me they ended the service, but the air stank of sadness.

I went past a few people who fed me their sympathy. I only returned it with a curt nod. "Ruby Jenson." I stopped abruptly knowing where the voice was coming from.
