Chapter Twenty One ~ Repressed Memories
&&&
Abella's pov~
When Myra, Alex and I entered the grocery store, the only thing on my mind was the aisle that held potato chips and salsa cans. Alex had gone off to the isle with toys and took Myra with him. He had shown up unexpectedly just before we left and he decided to join Myra and I on our pursuit to fill up the fridge and cabinets at home.
Pushing the cart, I walked down the empty isle until I stopped in front of the Doritos section. Of course, I picked up two bags since my love for the food was absolutely endless. As I placed the bags into the empty cart, I noticed a familiar figure walking toward me. Within seconds, I realized that the figure was Martin. He looked a bit different, but somehow the same as I had last remembered.
Martin smiled, waving his hand as he walked closer. "Hey," he greeted casually. "Haven't seen you in a while. You've been avoiding me?" He joked, but his voice lacked a bit of humor. I forced an awkward laugh, avoiding my gaze from his piercing brown eyes. I felt guilty for dropping all contact with Martin, but something about the way Alex warned me to stay away from him made me want to do just that.
I pretended to take interest in the various bags of chips that laid on the rack. "No," I shook my head after a brief moment of silence. "I mean, I've just been really busy lately." My words weren't a lie, but they also weren't the entire truth. 'And I've been avoiding you,' probably would have been better, but hurtful, words to use.
Martin nodded, his hands dug into the pocket of his jeans. "Norma told me you quit." He said. "And at the same time Alex did." I nodded, wishing there was some way Alex could sense my distress and come pull me out of the situation. Martin seemed nice, but something inside me told me he was nothing but trouble.
"I was offered a great job somewhere else," I explained, refusing to meet his piercing gaze. "They're paying double what I used to make with both jobs combined. I figured I could also use this opportunity to spend more time with Myra." As soon as Jeffrey told me how much I would be getting paid, I called Norma and told her about my renounce at Melrose. I also managed to convince Norma to give Wesley a free meal every day since I didn't want my absence to affect the food plan I held with him.
Martin nodded, a small frown on his lips. "I'm disappointed, Abella," he said, staring blankly at the rack of chips. "The fact that you've managed to fall so easily for Alex's tricks, I'm disappointed. I never thought you to be so stupid." His voice dropped, a hard edge laced in his tone. This was a side of Martin Adams I had yet to see, and I didn't like it one bit.
"Excuse me?" I scoffed, trying not to seem the least bit offended. "How am I stupid?"
Martin chuckled darkly, his eyes narrowed as he took a step toward me. "Do you honestly believe," he took another step forward and I took a huge step back, "that Alex Gaskarth, Baltimore's most well known player, would suddenly change and settle down for someone like you? Someone who doesn't even put out, from what I can tell." He sneered. "Realize this, Abella--Alex Gaskarth doesn't date. He finds a girl, wins her over, fucks her then leaves. You're no different." With that, he turned around and walked away.
I leaned back against the cart, a quiet sigh left my mouth as I ran my fingers through my hair. I hated to know that the Martin I thought was my friend, was a fake all along. But why would I believe anything that came from his mouth? Then again, he did have a point... Alex did suddenly seem to take an interest in me... And he saw me naked before he even asked me to be his girlfriend.
"No," I shook my head, refusing to believe anything that Martin said. I wasn't going to let him mess with my mind. There was no way I was going to let his possible lies mess up the relationship I had with Lex.
