As expected, the car ride was completely silent. That goes for the both of us. I didn't speak and neither did she. I was kind of glad for the silence, I didn't really want to talk. Not to her, not to anyone.
Finally, she stopped at a quaint little thrift shop. It sort of looked like a brown, worn-out beach house, and I silently hoped the interior was nothing like this view. We made our way towards the entrance, and I opened the door, the little bell dinging behind me.
"Welcome!" a woman called from behind the counter. "Is there anything in particular you're searching for?"
Normally, I'd go with pink, or blue, depending on my mood, so that's what I decided to do.
"Yes ma'am. Anything long, but only black."
Within thirty five minutes, everything and I do mean everything, that was black was in my shopping bag, and Mrs. Tilly paid with her credit card.
After that, we went shoe shopping and I got at least eight pairs shoes, all black.
We got back in the car and I buckled up, then Mrs. Tilly copied my movements, then gave me a sideways glance, then stared at the bag I was holding.
"Are you sure you don't want something else?" she asked, giving me a pointed look.
I scoffed. "Are you implying something's wrong with what I wear?"
"No. It's just black is a little much."
"Actually, it's fine." I snapped, and her face turned into one of pure hurt and for a second, guilt sprung in my stomach.
Don't feel that way, my inner-voice thought, it's her fault you're stuck here.
No it isn't, I argued. It's that mystery killer. He's the reason your parents are dead. He's the reason you're living like this.
"Sophia? SOPHIA?!"
I jumped, staring over at Mrs. Tilly.
She stared at me in concern, and I felt my heart warm for a few seconds. It's been a while since anyone has looked at me like that.
I looked over at the keys, which were lying by her side. "Well?" I snapped. "Start the car."
She complied, and we drove in silence to her house, the house I'd never call mine.

"Sophia! Time for dinner!" Mrs. Tilly called from downstairs.
I hopped off of the bed and walked down the stairs, the smell of fried chicken wafting to my nose.
I sniffed the air, the smell making my mouth water. I walked towards the table as Mrs. Tilly was pouring two cups with water.
The table was set, the four seats that were only going to occupy two had plates over delicate napkins, two forks knife, on either side. It made me think of a fancy restaurant Mom and Dad took me to once.
She set the cups down at our spots and I licked my lips at the sight of my dinner plate. Two legs of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and two handfuls of homemade french fries lined my plate neatly, every item an approximate distance away, so no food touched. Geez, this woman was neat.
I took a bite, and moaned. She could cook too.
Mrs. Tilly smiled at me, her eyebrows raised appreciatively. "Is it good?"
I laughed. "Good? It's not good!!"
Her face fell, and I laughed mentally at her reaction.
"It's DELICIOUS!"
She smiled, and suddenly we were laughing and eating our food in silence.
She stopped eating and stared at me in a way that made my stomach turn.
"What?" I asked, mouth full, my manners forgotten.
I swallowed, suddenly my stomach hurting.
"There's something I wanted to talk to you about Sophia."
I grabbed my leg, and bit into it, nodding my head, motioning for her to continue.
"You do know that we're almost at the end of October, right?"
"Sure I do." What was her point?
"Well, school's continuing at this time."
"Okay... so?"
She sighed, took a deep breath. "You're enrolled at Biloxi High school. You start in two days."
I dropped my fork, the sound clanging against my ears. I had no words, and neither did she.
