I sat in the chair, eyebrows raised.
Aaron sat next to me, and we were both looking at the one woman who would give us the worst sentence ever. Principal Reaux looked shocked. I know I was. But to be honest, it felt good punching the crap out of Aaron.
"What happened here?" Principal Reaux asked, a hint of interest dripping off her tongue.
I looked at Aaron, my eyes challenging him to lie. To get me in trouble. He looked at me with a new perspective. Now I was the shark and him the fish. Not the other way around.
As if sensing my change in roles, he scooted his chair farther away from me and I smiled. He held the paper napkin closer to his nose, which was bent sideways and had blood spurting from it like a fountain. "She punched me," He muffled through the napkin.
Principal Reaux turned to me now. "Did you touch her first?"
"No ma'am." He replied quickly.
Principal Reaux sighed. "I think I've heard enough. Aaron, you're free to go. Go see the nurse about that bloody nose."
Aaron nodded, then exited.
"Are you serious?!" I fumed.
"You put your hands on him first."
"You don't even know what he did! Do you even care about the fact that he teased me ever since I moved here? Do you know how many times he called me ugly? He tripped me in a hallway! He badmouthed Aston! And you don't even care!"
I stood up, turning towards the door.
"Sophia, come back here."
"No! This is bullshit!" I screamed.
I walked faster, slamming the office door behind me. I could hear Principal Reaux calling me, and I most likely knew I would be suspended for my "language", but I didn't care.
I walked farther down the hall, until I came to the entrance. I shoved the double doors open, both doors slamming into the brick walls. I walked outside, my vision blurring.
I looked for Mrs. Tilly's van, but saw no sign of it.
Suddenly, I heard a horn honking at me, and I looked up. It was a truck.
Curious, I walked towards it, discovering the driver.
"Need a lift? I heard school ran a little late."
"Aston?"
--------------------------------------
"Aston? What are you doing here? You're not in jail?"
"Get in. We can talk about it on the way out of here."
I complied, and we rode in silence until I asked the question.
"If you weren't guilty, why did they take you in for questioning?"
He swallowed, then took a shaky breath before answering my question. "After you broke up with me, my heart shattered. Remember how I told you I stopped cutting when I met you? Well, when you cut me out of your life, that's when I started again. I cut everywhere on my body. The pain started again. I was sobbing and was contemplating suicide. I mean, nobody needs me. That's what I thought. Right before I cut some more, Melissa came in. She started sobbing and held me to her. She was screaming about how stupid I was being and asked me why I even cut in the first place. I told her, and she said she had something to take care of. She left in a hurry and my blood got all over her. When they looked at her body, they found my blood on her so they took me in for questioning. After I told them the story, they believed me." He pulled over to the side of the road.
It took me a few moments to process this, and I was silent.
"Sofa? What's wrong?"
I took deep shaky breaths until I let out a choked sob. "Ash. How dare you? How dare you?!" I yelled. "You broke your promise!"
"Yeah? I'm not the only one who broke that promise, huh?!" He yelled back.
We were both breathing hard and I was so upset, and angry.
I slapped him repeatedly and I started sobbing again. "I did this to you!" I sobbed. Aston pulled me to him, rubbing his hands in a circular motion in my back.
I couldn't take it anymore. I cried and cried until my breathing slowed.
I was suddenly aware of my position. I was close to him, the cup holder was raised, and my feet were resting in his lap. I gasped as he brushed a tear off of my cheek with his finger.
Suddenly, he came in closer until his breath was mixed with mine. "I don't care if you like me or not," He began softly, "but I need you Sophia. I need someone I can count on. You're all I have left." He whispered.
He was taking his sweet time and I couldn't take it. I yanked him to me and our lips touched. The kiss was sweet, passionate, fiery, and full of sorrow. We both lost so much- yet we had the world: Each other.
I sobbed into his shoulder as he continued to kiss me. He kissed my cheek and held me to him. I wrapped my hands in his hair, and he rested his hand around mine and I yelped.
He stopped, startled and concerned. "Did I hurt you?" He asked.
I laughed. "No, I did that. I, um, sort of punched Aaron across the face."
He grinned. "I didn't know you had it in you, Sofa."
"Shut up," I grinned, shoving him playfully. He slapped me back, laughing as I laid my head on his shoulder.
We arrived at the police station and I knew what was coming. It was time for questioning. I turned to Aston.
"Wait for me?" I asked.
He gave me a quick kiss on the lips which eventually deepened. "Always," He whispered.
I bit my lip and got out of the truck, my heart pounding with every waking moment. Here we go...
