I sprinted down the stairs, a smile plastered on my face. I was finally happy. I had friends. Real friends. People who wanted to be friends with me, not because they were forced to, or even paid to do it, just because they liked me for who I was. That was a refreshing feeling for someone like me. For someone who was hideous, and had no family, this was a huge deal.

Mrs. Tilly sat on the couch, reading a magazine, when she looked up, noticing my presence.
"Yes? Sophia, what is it?"

"Can I have a friend over?"

She could hardly hold in her delight. "Are you serious? You made your first real friend?"

I laughed. "I made two, actually."

"Really? Who are they?"

"Their names are Melissa and Aston. They stood up to the bullies that were messing with me."

She grinned. "I'm liking them already. Are they both girls?"

"Actually, Aston's a guy. And I'm pretty sure you don't want a guy sleeping over. But can Melissa come?"

She nodded, obviously pleased with the fact that I was asking for this to even take place.

I rushed up to my room and dialed Melissa's number, eager to tell her the news.
"Lissa?" I asked.
"Hey. Wadayya doing, Sofa?" Great. It was Aston. What was he doing with Melissa's phone?
"Aston. Give Melissa the phone, please!" I begged, cringing at the nickname he gave me.

"You don't want to talk to me?!"
I laughed at his reaction and could practically see him glaring at me through the phone. "I'd like to talk to Melissa first, if that's okay?"

He huffed. "Fine. Have it your way."
I laughed. "Bye, Burger King."

He mumbled something then handed the phone to Melissa.

"Hey girlie!" she chirped.

"Guess what, Lissa?"

"What?"

"I asked. You can come!!"

"Yay!" she cheered on the other end of the line and we giggled like crazy. "Sophia, you know that Halloween is coming up right?"

"Yeah. Why?"
"Aston and I are normally bored on the holiday, and we were hoping you'd come over. Maybe you could come sleep after?"

"Sounds fun! When do you want to come over?"
She paused, trying to find a perfect time to come. "How about tomorrow night?"

It was a Friday, and Mrs. Tilly could bring us home, so that could work.

"Perfect!"
"Are you excited for tomorrow?" she asked.

"What's tomorrow?" My mind was wayyyy out there. I had zero idea what she was talking about.

"The poem presentation. Are you excited?"
I groaned. "Oh, man! I totally forgot. Do you think we're gonna need-"

"Dude! Aston! Give me my phone back! Asto-"

There was a muffled noise, then a smack, and the phone fell.
"Hello?" No answer.
"Uh.. HELLO?!"

"Hey, Sofa. Why you nervous?"

"Aston! What did you do to Melissa?"
He chuckled. "Nothing," he replied, just as I heard Melissa yell in the background, "He tied me to a chair! Help me!"

"Now," he continued, "why are you so scared?"

I sighed. "I hate public speaking. I always have and I always will."

"You're gonna do amazing. You always handle things so well, and this is just another one to add to the list." His voice no longer held that cockiness, but instead held complete seriousness.

"Thanks, Ash."

"No problem. Now, I'm going to sleep, and you should too."

"Yes. Mom." I mocked, then suddenly felt sadness in my stomach for the first time today. "I will," I said, depressed.

"Hey, it'll be fine. Now get some sleep. You need it. Night, Sofa."

I giggled softly. "Night, Ash. Sleep well."

"You do the same. See you tomorrow in the morning."

I set the phone down on the table and closed my eyes, a single tearfalling down my cheek. "Night , Mom. Night, Dad." I called into thenight, for the first time in two days
