Chapter Ten

"Matthew?" I finally managed to find my voice after several minutes. "What are you doing here?"

He stared at me as if it were completely and utterly obvious. "Mrs. Til didn't tell you?" He grinned, then nodded slightly. "We're neighbors!"

"Yay.." I replied, completely unenthusiastic.

He looked around the room awkwardly and so did I, unsure of what to do.

I was completely baffled by his behavior. Especially since the last time we talked was an argument.

He was acting like nothing was wrong. And I didn't really understand it.

More awkward silence followed, and I was thankful that Mrs. Tilly called us for dinner.

I set my fork down on my plate and took a gulp of my water, then looked at Mrs. Tilly expectantly.

"Sophia! Why don't you and Matthew go outside and chat for a few while us adults have some talking time?"

Was she serious?! I did not want to talk to him. Why couldn't I just text Melissa or something?

But being the good girl I was, I nodded politely, grabbed my phone, and escorted Matthew outside.

We walked in silence, everything was quiet until my phone chirped.

It was a text message. From Melissa.

Found the aggravating neighbor yet?

I laughed at Melissa's response and found that Matthew was staring over my shoulder.

I turned and glared at him, then he swallowed.

"Sorry. It's just I really, really, really like your phone."

"Yeah. I can tell." I snapped.

Beep!!

Another text, except this time, from Aston.

Is he bothering you? Do you need me to school him? I can bring my "books"! :)

I rolled my eyes and turned to look at Matthew. "Look," I began. "I'm sorry for being a donkey the last time we talked. You were just being completely sweet, and I wasn't and I'm -"

"You were right." he interrupted.

"You were the one who said that comment?" Tears sprang to my eyes.

"No! Not at all. Just the reason why you would suspect that would be right."

He grabbed my phone suddenly, then typed something in it.

He handed it back to me with a charming grin. "I wanted to add my number to the list."

I laid in my bed that night when suddenly my phone chirped.

Hey ,Sophia. I was wondering if you wanted to go to a bonfire in two days for Halloween? It would be really awesome if you did.
