Chapter 50: Aura Boost

Dawn, Mom, and I sit at our table in the cafe. Mom smiles. "So, what did Volkner say?" she asks.

I smile. "I'll be able to battle him when everyone's able to battle."

Eve glares at me. "You mean when I'm able to battle."

I sigh and look at her. "I know you took quite a beating last night."

"Quite a beating?! It was one attack!"

Dawn looks at me and sighs. "When you two talk, I wish I could hear what Eve's saying."

Pachirisu looks up from her bowl of food and runs up Dawn's leg to her shoulder. "Pachi pachi."

Dawn smiles and pets the small electric type. I see Flint walk in and he looks around. He sees us and smiles. "Hey guys. You mind if I sit with you three?"

I smile. "Not at all. Come on over."

He sits in the extra chair at our table. I clear my throat. "You said Barry came through here, right?"

He nods. "Yeah."

"Do you know where he went afterwards?"

He shakes his head. "Nope. Never said."

I think about the pokémon on his team. "He will most likely have a Staraptor, Torterra, Blaziken, Rapidash, and Azelf in the Pokémon League."

Dawn thinks. "That's only five, though. We're allowed six in the league. I doubt Cynthia will let us use the ten she allowed us in gyms and the League."

Flint thinks. "I only remember seeing five pokéballs on his waist, but I'm probably wrong."

"What could it be?" Dawn asks.

I sigh. "We have every possible pokémon he could catch in the world as a possibility. I say we just forget about it and wait for the League."

Mom nods. "Chris is right. We're just wasting time."

The waiter comes back with our coffee. Dawn happily sips from her cup, and Pachirisu looks curiously into the cup. I think about Lucario's power-up last night. I look down at Eve, who looks back up at me. "What?"

"Just thinking."

"About what?"

"Yesterday, I powered up Lucario using Aura and I was thinking... maybe it would work for you and the rest."

Eve closes her eyes and rests her head on the ground. "Maybe."

Flint looks at me. "What's up?"

I sigh. "It's just... I figured out a way to boost my pokémon's power, but I don't know if it's worth it. When I used it against Miror B. yesterday, both Lucario and I were nearly unconscious."

Dawn closes her eyes. "Maybe you should try to attempt Aura Boost again."

I nod. "Probably after we eat."

Flint puts his finger up to his chin. "I kind of want to see this."

Mom nods. "Me, too."

I smile. "Of course you two can see it."

Eve sighs. "I guess you won't need me then."

"I was thinking about letting you be the one to experience this."

She lifts her head up, surprised. I smile at Eve and she smiles back. "Thank you!"

[An Hour Later]

Mom sits under a tree with Flint, watching me and Eve prepare ourselves. Dawn sits in the grass near me, holding another cup of coffee. Pachirisu sits next to her, enjoying the cool ocean breeze. I send out Lucario, who appears across from us. I put two fingers on my Key Stone. "Lucario, Mega Evolve!"

Lucario mega evolves and prepares for Eve's Aura Boost. "I'm ready when you are," he says.

Eve nods and takes a deep breath. A pink aura starts flowing around her; she's ready. I let my Aura flow freely. I hold my arms at my sides. I lift my right arm up and reach forward, facing my open palm at Eve. I close my eyes and feel the two of our Auras separately. I hear Eve's unsteady breathing and her racing heart. She's too nervous. I open my eyes and observe her. Her legs are shaking. I smile. "Eve. Calm down."

She nearly jumps in fear. "It won't work if you're tense like that. Let your Aura flow freely around you, then the two of us can become one."

She hesitates, then nods. Lucario is being patient and giving Eve a reassuring smile. I close my eyes again, feeling Eve's condition. She's much calmer now and her Aura is flowing a little smoother. I put my outstretched arm back at my side. I take another deep breath, this time letting my Aura fly towards Eve. Eve takes notice and does the same. I feel our Auras connecting. I don't even need to see it to know. I open my eyes and smile. "Aura... Boost!"

Our Auras intermingle and connect as one. I feel Eve's stamina and power exponentially increasing the longer we're connected. Eve's Aura appears around her. It's both pink and blue. Dawn stands up and cheers. "It worked!"

Eve smiles and looks back at me. "We did it!"

Lucario nods and claps his hands together in front of him. He spreads them apart, creating a bone. I smile and flare up my Aura. Eve immediately understands and dashes forward. She's moving faster than ever, even with an injured leg. Lucario swings the bone upward, trying to catch Eve in her path, but Eve wraps her feelers around it and whips it away from him. She jumps up and hits Lucario with his own Bone Rush, dealing quite a bit of damage before landing on his head, dropping the bone, and jumping towards the lighthouse. She lands on the side of the lighthouse and jumps off. Her feelers glow silver and whip at Lucario. Eve uses Iron Tail to deal more damage, knocking Lucario back towards me. I step aside, letting Lucario catch himself on the ground. Eve lands in front of the stairs to the lighthouse door. "Moonblast, Eve."

Eve smirks and runs forward. Her blue eyes shine with determination as a Moonblast generates on each of her four feelers. She jumps into the air right in front of Lucario. Lucario attempts to use Power-Up Punch, but misses even in his heightened state of awareness. Eve whips her feelers at him, launching the Moonblasts at him at point blank range. Dirt and dust fly up and Lucario flies backwards into the air. He crashes into a tree and grunts in pain. He falls several feet to the ground. He attempts to get up, but falls to the ground, reverting to normal. Eve pants for air as she walks out of the dirt cloud, which is starting to clear up. Eve walks over to me and smiles. She closes her eyes and sits down, taking a deep breath. I sit down with her and concentrate. I feel our combined Auras. "Now carefully separate our Auras," I say. "They're part of us and if we damage our Aura, we also get hurt."

Eve nods and starts slowly separating her Aura from mine. I draw my Aura away from hers until they are fully separated. I still feel a wave of exhaustion hit me like a ton of bricks. Eve groans and falls onto my lap, asleep. I pull out my pokéball and return Lucario. Eve breathes lightly onto my lap as I lie down. I close my eyes and fall asleep.
