Chapter 74: The Return

I feel the sunlight on my fur as I wake up. I yawn and stretch. Kitsune and Maxime are cuddling each other. Carole and Sally are lying on a pillow, embracing. Chris and Dawn are still lying in bed. I see a figure slowly floating up, yawning. Uxie floats towards the window, but freezes upon seeing us. I smile. "Don't tell Chris yet," I whisper.

Uxie flies at me, hugging me. "I missed you so much, Eve! Don't ever run off like that again!" She sees Kit and Max. "Who are they?"

"They're my kids. The Eevee is Kitsune and the Vulpix is Maxime."

She smiles at me. "You and Fennec must be so proud." She looks around. "Wait... where's Fennec?"

I frown and lie my head on the pillow. "Dead."

Uxie floats over to me and lies her hand on my head. She gasps and recoils. "Oh, Arceus. That's horrible. At least you made new friends," she says, gesturing to Sally and Carole.

"Yeah." I hear the sheets rustling. Chris is getting up now. I take a deep breath. "I guess it's time to explain."

Chris groans and stretches, standing up. He turns to the window, and I stand up, smiling. He freezes and starts smiling. "Eve..." I run over to him and leap into his arms. He embraces me. "Where did you go? I found a dead Weavile, then you and Fennec disappeared. What happened?"

I look to make sure my kids aren't up. "It's a long story."

I catch him up, only reaching the part about Hugo when I hear Carole getting up. I look at her and smile. "Hey," I say in Pokéspeech.

"Hey."

Chris looks at her. "Who's that?"

"Carole. One of the people who were ordered to kill me."

He looks at me. "What...?"

I continue explaining about Hugo, then reach Fennec's death. I stop talking. "Fennec... he lost too much blood. He was missing a leg... and had several deep gashes all over his body. He didn't make it. He never had a chance of surviving by the time I got to him."

"Oh, Arceus."

"And Melody... She didn't die, but Hugo told me that... that... Gareth... loved her. They had kids. They were mates. I just..."

He pets me. I've forgotten what it felt like. "It's okay. Just skip it. I get what you're saying."

I nod. "Okay."

I finish explaining when Dawn wakes up. Chris looks at Kitsune and Maxime. "They're amazing."

Dawn is in tears. "Oh, Arceus," she says when Uxie lies her hand on Dawn's head. "That's awful..."

I walk over to Kitsune and Max. They're both so beautiful. "When do we leave?"

"Today, in an hour."

I smile. "Good. I don't ever want to come back here."

Kit yawns and opens her eyes. She gets up and tackles me to the ground. "Mommy!"

She nuzzles me, waking Max up. He yawns, then walks towards me. "Mommy, I wanna play, too."

"We can't play right now. We have to get ready to go."

Dawn and Chris start getting dressed. Carole and Sally are sitting on their pillow. "So, what now?" I ask them.

Carole looks out the window. "If I go back there, Hugo'll kill me."

"Then come with us."

She looks at me, then smiles. "Alright."

Ten minutes later, we're in the plaza. Chris is calling a taxi to take us to the airport. I play with Max and Kit as we wait for the car to get here. I hear a car drive up to the sidewalk and honk its horn. Chris and Dawn get in, returning their pokémon. Only my kids, Sally, Carole, and I are out of our balls. Dawn caught Sally and Carole, and Chris caught my kids. Dawn and Chris climb in, then Max lies on Chris's lap. Sally floats onto Dawn's lap, purring. Kitsune waits for me and Carole. I look back at the town.

Carole and I gasp. A shadowy figure in standing out in the open about five feet in front of us. Black fire surrounds his head and two red eyes stare us down. He chuckles. "Go ahead," Hugo says. "If you come back, I'll kill you two without hesitation."

I nod. "It's a pleasure to meet you Hugo."

Carole is shaking in fear. "T-t-thank you..."

"Get out of here."

We get in the car. I watch Hugo walk into the shadows, vanishing.

[Chris's POV]

Dawn and I sit next to each other on the plane. Eve sits in the seat by the window with Kitsune and Maxime. Kit looks out the window in awe, and Max is sleeping with his side leaning against Eve.

I put my hand on Dawn's. She smiles at me. "We've been on vacation long enough," I say.

She nods. "Yeah. I'll call the International Police to start our first job when we get back."

"I hope it'll be something simple."

Dawn giggles. "Wouldn't count on it."

I chuckle. "Yeah. I doubt it'll be easy."

She smiles. "We'll think about it later. Let's just relax for now."

I take a deep breath. "Yeah. Let's."

The plane took until nightfall to land in Sinnoh. No one greeted us upon our return, but as soon as we got to our bed, Dawn and I fell asleep, not even remotely ready for what awaited us next.
