Chapter 71: Melody

[Melody's POV; The Next Morning]

I wake up to laughter. I blink my eyes awake and look at where the noise is coming from. Jean and Mary and rough housing again. I groan and yawn. Mary sees me and runs over, smiling. "Mommy!"

I smile and nuzzle her. "Now petit, you know you should be a bit quieter when Mommy's sleeping."

Mary frowns. "I'm sorry. Jean wanted to play with me."

I smile at my two children. "I suppose we should head out. Let's get going, you two."

Mary and Jean follow close to me. Mary was born first, then Jean a few minutes later. They are three and a quarter now. Mary is a Vulpix, and Jean is an Eevee. I look at Jean and think of Eve for a few minutes as we walk. 'Sister...' I think to myself.

We come across the woods outside the grotto. I think of Mom, Dad, and Fennec. I spot two Sitrus Berries on a bush. They're ripe, but there are only two. Mary and Jean start playing as I sneak towards the bush. As I see the two berries, my stomach growls. I haven't eaten in two days... but neither have my children. I smile and pluck the berries off of the bush and take them over to Jean and Mary. As they eat, I look out over the horizon. The sun reflects off the water, and the sound of the ocean waves is like music to my ears. "Eve... Fennec... I hope that wherever you are, you're safe."

After they finish eating, I lead my children through the cave that leads to the grotto. I want Mom and Dad to at least see them once.

The vast grotto opens up before me, but as I see the plaza, I gasp, blocking the children's vision with my tail. "Mommy!" Jean says. "I can't see anything!"

I'm in tears. "You don't want to see this. Turn around and go into the cave. Hide until I tell you to come out."

"But Mom!"

I glare at Jean. "Now!"

He flinches, then nods. He turns to his sister. "Let's go."

"Don't let anyone see you two," I tell them as they run into the darkness.

I turn my head back towards the Sylveon in the distance. I gasp and fight back tears. I sneak forward, smiling.

I near the plaza and see a pool of blood. I stop. Gareth is looking down at them. I can't see his face. Who's blood is that? Why is Gareth by the blood? I step closer.

Mom's and Dad's corpses are lying on the ground.

I walk up behind him and lie my head on him. "Hey." They gasp. I'm taken aback; his gasp sounded feminine. I look at the Sylveon. She looks somewhat familiar. "Who are you? What are you doing by my parent's corpses?!"

The Sylveon gasps and smiles. "Melody? Is that you?" she asks.

I grit my teeth. "How do you know my name?!"

She smiles. "It's me. Your sister. Eve."

I gasp and back up. Tears well up in my eyes. I shake. "Why are you a Sylveon?"

"My trainer... he helped me evolve."

"Trainer? You were captured?"

Eve nods and grins. "His name is Chris."

I hear some shout, "Eve? Where are you?"

The voice also sounds familiar. Eve turns to the origin. "Over here! There's something you want to see."

A Ninetails walks around the corner and freezes. I slowly smile and start running towards my brother. "Fennec!"

He smiles. "Melody!"

We embrace and nuzzle each other. "It's been forever." Something pops into my head. "Why are Mom and Dad dead?"

Fennec looks away. "We had to do that. They were working for Gareth."

I gasp and back up. "What...?"

Eve walks up from behind me. I jump around and pant in fear as she does. I'm shaking, but then stop. "I'm sorry. I'm still getting used to you. Anyway, I have to go get some little brats. Come with me!"

The three of us walk away from the grotto and enter the cave. "Jean! Mary! Come on out. It's safe."

My two children run out to me and snuggle in close to me. I smile and blush at my brother. "I had kids while you two were gone."

He smiles. "Who's the lucky guy?"

I freeze and look down. "I'll tell you later," I whisper.

My two siblings nod. Eve walks ahead of me and Fennec, playing with her nephew and niece. They laugh and run out to the field. Fennec smiles, then looks down. "What evolution was their father, Melody?" he asks. I look at him. He looks into my eyes; he's crying. "If it's who I think it is, do not tell Eve."

I feel a lump in my throat as he says this. "How did you figure me out so quickly?"

"One of your children is an Eevee. You obviously had children with one of their evolutions. And the way you've been acting around Eve... You met a Sylveon, didn't you?"

I close my eyes and nod. "Yeah. Gareth is their father." I feel tears welling up in my eyes. "They were conceived about three years ago. Gareth left last year," I murmur the last part.

Fennec looks at me. "I'm sure he hurt you. It's okay. Just don't tell Eve. Not in the state she's been in."

I look at him. "What do you mean?"

"She killed Gareth in Sinnoh."

I gasp and look at Eve. "How...?"

"She impaled him on a rock, but it gets worse. She's brutally killed five others. She stabbed a Raticate through his heart, tore into a Weavile, ripped an Absol's throat out, choked Mom then snapped her neck, and finally, she tore Dad apart. I'm scared of what she'll do next..."

I look at Eve in horror. She looks so innocent while playing with my kids, but knowing the thing within her... I'm not sure I want her near them. I shut my eyes and turn my head away. I see flashes in my mind of Eve when she was younger. If she knew what she would end up doing, I wonder how she would've reacted. Would she have accepted it? Would she have been terrified? Or would she do anything different?

I look over at Eve. I jump as I see mental images of Eve covered in my children's blood... I shut my eyes and shake my head. When I open them, I see Eve gently petting Jean's head with her feeler. I see her stabbing into his head and hear his screams echoing through the air as she grins in pleasure. I shut my eyes, but the images don't leave this time. Eve is just petting them! What's wrong with you, Melody?!

I grimace. She's a murderer! And you left her with your kids! I reply.

She would never harm your family.

She killed our parents, you bitch!!!

And were they good parents?

I growl. "SHUT UP!!!" I yell into the air.

Everyone stops and looks towards me. Eve is shaking, a bit scared. "M-Melody? Are you o-?"

I growl at her. "Get away from my kids."

Eve is looking at me in shock. "I... didn't do anythin-"

"What. Did. I. Say?"

Eve starts walking toward Fennec, who is also looking at me in worry. My kids run to me. Fennec steps forward, whispering, "Go to the port town to the east of here. Chris will probably still be looking for us there. He has black hair and will be with a girl called Dawn. Find him and try to get his to know who you are. He knows you exist."

I nod. "Alright." I glare at Eve. "Don't you dare lose yourself in your rage."

She gasps as I turn and walk away. My children walk a bit further in front of me so that I can make sure they're safe.
