Chapter 12: SHIELD is Compromised

Steve and Y/N parked the motorcycle outside his building and he lead them to his apartment. On their way, his pretty neighbor, Kate, came out with some laundry while on the phone with her aunt. Noticing how pretty she was and thought how she and Steve would hit it off, Y/N hid her shield and hat behind the corner real quick.

"That's so sweet. That is so nice. Hey. I gotta go, though. Okay, bye," she said on the phone, hung up, turned to Steve, then explained, "My aunt, she's kind of an insomniac."

Steve smiled at her.

"Yeah," she continued then indicated to Y/N, "Who's this?"

"This is my sister, Y/N. It's her first day here and I've been showing her around," Steve introduced.

"I'm Kate. It's nice to meet you," Kate introduced herself, holding her hand out.

"It's nice to meet you too," Y/N returned, shook her hand, then said, "Oh! I forgot something. I'll be right back."

She got to the corner, grabbed her shield, and hid to hear the conversation. Steve saw right through the act, but went with it.

"Hey, if you want...if you want, you're welcome to use my machine. Might be cheaper than the one in the basement," Steve offered.

"Oh, yeah? What's it cost?" Kate asked.

"A cup of coffee?" Steve said.

Y/N almost squealed with excitement, but quickly covered her mouth.

"Thank you, but um...I already have a load in downstairs, and, uh...you really don't want my scrubs in your machine. I just finished orientation in the infectious diseases ward, so," Kate explained.

"Ah, well, I'll keep my distance," Steve assured.

"Well hopefully not too far," Kate replied.

Steve nodded and that's when Y/N came back into view with her shield on her back.

"Found it," she said, holding her hat.

She put her hat on her head and went to Steve without turning her back to Kate. She leaned against the wall as Steve turned to unlock the door of his apartment. He did it while noticing the smirk on Y/N's face while she wiggled her eyebrows. He rolled his eyes in response.

"Oh, and I think you left your stereo on," Kate told him.

"Oh. Right, thank you," Steve thanked.

"Yeah," Kate smiled then left.

Steve and Y/N then directed their attention to the door suspiciously. They faintly heard music coming from inside the apartment.

"What do we do?" Y/N whispered.

"We'll go through the back window. Come on," Steve whispered back.

They went through the window,  grabbed their shields, and readied themselves. They looked around the corner cautiously and saw Nick on the couch. Y/N kept a defensive position since she never met Nick before, but Steve gave her the signal to stand down, so she obeyed.

"I don't remember giving you a key," Steve told him.

"You really think I'd need one? My wife kicked me out," Nick replied.

"Didn't know you were married," Steve admitted.

"A lot of things you don't about me," Nick said.

"I know, Nick. That's the problem," Steve responded.

Steve turned the light on, seeing Nick was injured. This worried the siblings a little, but Nick signaled for him to be quiet. Nick turned the light back off and wrote a text on his phone and shows it to them:

"Ears everywhere. Y/N, stay quiet."

Y/N nodded and Nick nodded back.

"I'm sorry to have to do this, but I had no place else to crash," Nick said.

He got another text ready and showed it to them:

"SHIELD compromised."

"Who else knows about your wife?" Steve asked, catching on to what was going on.

Fury showed them another text:

"You guys and me."

"Just...my friends," Nick answered.

"Is that what we are?" Steve asked.

"That's up to you," Nick responded.

Then someone shot Nick three times through the wall and he fell. Steve looked out the window for the shooter while Y/N quickly dragged Nick to the next room. Then they knelt down to his level where he gave them a flash drive.

"Don't...trust anyone," Nick told them.

Then he blacked out. The door then burst open and Steve and Y/N looked to see Kate.

"Captain and Lady Rogers?" she asked.

They noticed she had a gun.

"I'm Agent 13 of SHIELD Special Service," she introduced.

"Kate?" Steve questioned, beyond confused.

"I'm assigned to protect the two of you," she explained.

"On whose order?" Y/N asked.

That's when "Kate" (her real name being Sharon) noticed Nick on the ground, injured and unconscious.

"His," Sharon answered, went to Fury, then informed through her radio, "Foxtrot is down, he's unresponsive. I need EMTs."

"Do you have a twenty on the shooter?" a SHIELD agent asked.

The siblings then saw the shooter though the window.

"Tell him we're in pursuit," Steve told her.

They smashed through the window and ran after the assassin. The siblings chased him through an office building smashing through the walls. When they finally caught up with him on the roof, they each threw their shields at the assassin, but he caught it with one swift move, threw them back to them, and then leapt off the building and disappeared. The siblings looked to see he was gone.

"Who was that guy?" Y/N asked.

"I don't know. But we need to go and see if Nick is going to make it," Steve told her.

She nodded and they ran back to the apartment.
