Scott and I were currently walking through the doors of the hospital into the hectic hallways as we searched for our mom. We found her spinning around with slight worry on her face. Scott held up the lunch and I looked around seeing all the patients who were coming in from a ten car pile-up.
We walked towards her and a smile or relief came upon her lips. "I'm starving she said, spinning around and placing it on the counter before sighing. "Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Thank you for bringing me dinner." She spun around and pull us into hugs as I chuckled.
"Is everything okay?" Scott asked after she pulled back.
"Except for half the accident victims in a ten car pile-up being rerouted here from downtown, and the E.R. attending not answering any of his pages, yeah, I'm okay." She sarcastically replied, giving me a small smile.
"What does not answering pages mean?" I ask.
"It means that nobody can find him, so now we have to wait for the on call to get here." Suddenly a lady came up from behind her. "Yes?" She said, turning her attention onto the waiting patient.
"Excuse me, can I kind of please have something for the pain?" The lady asked, her face contorting into pain. Scott and I glanced at each other as our mom brought her back to her seat.
"Okay, I'm sorry. I know. But, actually, giving you something could complicate things, so we really just need to wait for the doctors, okay?"
"Yeah."
"Okay. How much longer on Dr. Hilyard?" Mom turned around and walked towards the receptionist.
"Ten minutes." She replied, a phone to her ear.
I glanced around and saw the hurting patient still gasping in pain. I slowly sat down beside her and spoke up with a small and reassuring smile.
"Excuse me miss, I heard online that sometimes human contact can help with pain." I held out my hand and she hesitantly took it while giving me a nod. I soon started to take her pain, wincing as it reached my neck.
"Thank you." She mumbled, no longer taking in deep breaths. Before I could reply, I heard a familiar voice.
"Someone help me!" I looked past her and found Ethan holding up Danny who looked like he was having trouble breathing. "Oh, I need help!" I quickly got up and grabbed Scott before helping hold up one of my friends as my mom directed us down the hall and into a waiting room.
"Okay, gentle, gentle, gentle!" Mom called as we slowly sat him down.
"What did you do to him?" Scott pulled Ethan away while I helped hold Danny up, taking some of his pain.
"Nothing. He said he was having chest pains and trouble breathing, but it... it just kept getting worse." I glanced up at the two of them while my mom listened to his heart beat.
"This is not good." Mom mumbled with her hand on his throat, "How much long on Dr. Hilyard?" She called before explaining the situation. "His larynx has shifted to the side. I think it's a tension pneumothorax."
Before she could finish her sentence, Danny shot out of the seat, white vomit hitting the floor.
"Mistletoe." Ethan and I whispered in unison, making eye contact. My mom called help from two other people and they picked him up and put him on a gurney before rolling him down and into the room full of other patients.
