Whispers and murmurs swept through the whole room. I heard some disappointed statements while others were victorious chatters mostly from girls. I heard some of them mention names like Alexei, Simon, et cetera.
They sound familiar… maybe Arianne had mentioned their names in one of her daily gossips or those might be names of jocks… not that I care. And since I don’t know them, I concluded that I’ve never talked to any of those people just like I’ve never talked to 99% of the people in this school. Take note that the remaining 1% consists of Arianne and her boyfriend, my aunt, employees like the janitorial staff, and some members of the faculty.
“Alright people, listen up,” interrupted Mr. Torre in his monotone voice, rolling a piece of paper open like it was a scroll. “Here are the other details and rules that Principal Skye gave so please stop talking and lend me your ears.”
“You’ve all heard that this class is partnered with the Chemistry class. Here’s the additional information. Number one: Everyone is partnered with a member of the opposite gender,” Mr. Torre announced, followed by squealing girls, excited chatter from the boys, and more depression for me. Knowing my aunt, it’s her simple but diabolical way of separating me from Arianne.
The teacher cleared his throat but only silence followed. He turned the second paper around for the class to see the largely printed letters saying “NUMBER TWO: PLEASE PROCEED TO THE SCHOOL GYMNASIUM AT EXACTLY ONE O’CLOCK FOR YOUR COLORED STUB. IT WILL LEAD YOU TO YOUR PARTNER. – PRINCIPAL SKYE”
All gazes went to the clock (I’m sure even the clock felt insecure), which informed us that we only have five minutes to spare, followed by chaotic scraping of chairs and a loud buzz of gossiping students trying to reach the gym – which was on the opposite end of the Math building – before the sadistic principal all gave them a scolding for being late for her special event.
I swear, my aunt loves to see us students in pain, I thought while I trudged through the field towards the gym.
I wasn’t in a rush to reach the school’s gymnasium unlike the others who wanted a good partner. I mean I’ll try my best to be as friendly as I can be since I don’t want the poor guy partnered to me to have a horrible senior year. I’m thinking of striking a deal which includes bribery with whoever he is. Since that’s what they think I am, what she made me to be, why not let them have it?
As you can already guess, I definitely don’t like to associate with people. Especially people who will pretend to be your friend but when it suits them and they’ve got what they wanted, they just abandon you. All those slimy witches who will stab you and laugh at you maniacally with their brooms and— and—I shook my head to erase the thoughts. Think happy thoughts: Usui Takumi, Sebastian Michaelis, Kazehaya!
As I entered the door to the gym, I was greeted by the school secretary. She spared me a glance before putting a blue wristband on my wrist and gestured for me to go inside. While waiting for my aunt to take the microphone and tell us what to do, I studied my wristband and saw the word “Spring” written on it. Before I could wonder what it meant, my aunt’s voice boomed through the gym.
