The 30th ball I attended began as usual, me arriving at the ball in a fine dress, white and emerald this time, meeting with Karl Heinz as soon as I arrived. As always, he was cheerful when he saw me.
"Ayame dear," he began. "Have you been well?" he asked as he kissed the back of my hand.
"I have," I replied, while curtseying. "How about yourself?"
"I have been doing splendidly," he said, now taking me to the dance floor.
He did not even acknowledge my parents anymore, but Father did not mind since he was still getting his recognition and money.
As I had grown in height over these past two years, he now grabbed me to dance not by the waits, but above it, very gently, while I grabbed him from his upper arm, since the difference was still wide. I had become more graceful in dancing since I had been taking lessons on Father's insistence that I must be an appropriate suitor for Karl's skills. And so we swayed all across the room, while he talked to me about the past month and I told him about mine.
"Ayame dear, this is a very important night," he said suddenly, somewhat exited, but with a mischievous look on his face.
"Why would that be so?" I asked, uninterested really.
"Well, because I have an announcement I am sure you will find most joyous."
"Is that so?" I wondered, curious now. "Will you communicate it now?"
"I will," he said then.
"Well then maybe you should have the music stopped so that your guests will listen."
"Oh no dear," said Karl, amused. "It is not for them to hear, it is only for you."
"For me?" I inquired, puzzled.
"Yes, your parents are aware of this. I must say your Father was more than pleased with the outcome," he continued.
"What?" I thought to myself. "My parents did not tell me anything about this."
I grew scared now; whatever Father thought pleasing would most probably be bad for me. It apparently showed in my face, since Karl widened his smile and said:
"I just love it when you get that scared expression, trying not to show it, but your eyes still have fear. Worry not, Ayame dear, this will bring you no harm."
This did not relax me at all. Throughout the years I had seen his macabre demeanor emerge slightly, but now it was on full display, as on that day he had tasted my blood for the first time. As if he had to have it all, as if he needed to posses all of it or else he would kill anyone who prevented him from doing so... and he would enjoy it. I still remembered how it was that anyone else who demanded for mu blood and insisted disappeared, and I was certain Karl dealt with it personally. Through all these years, I had never let my guard down with him, I had always been weary, and I was right to be so. I could see it in his eyes, how he was... evil.
"You must know," he began. "I was extremely interested in you since before I even saw you. 'The little girl with the exquisite blood, the magical birth and the regenerative powers'. However could I not be interested in this? And so when I called onto you and you came to the ball two years ago, I was extremely enthusiastic about our encounter. You must know I am centuries old, and become bored quite easily, but you, this new thing, came along; it was nothing like before. I did not expect, although, having found you so charming the instant we met. You really are charming, dear. But then I tasted the magnificent liquid that runs through your veins, and I knew I had to have you for myself only. Throughout these years I have been testing you Ayame, to be certain of how your personality would intertwine with mine. Together, with your blood and my strength, we could create the next Adam."
