Everything changed after she disappeared.
One would have thought that things would have gone back to normal after 5 years, but they did not.
Right after she left that man went berserk looking for her, turning the realms upside down in her search. The portal was the best option, but it had been destroyed on that night, most probably by her after she escaped. So Father went on to skim through the human realm, destroying everything on his wake to do so. I had never seen him so... exited. Two years after the search began, he suddenly stopped, and we thought he had found her, but his clear frustration and pouring into research of dark magic and science indicated that he did not.
Mother, on the other hand, became the worst version of herself yet seeing as Father would pay her absolutely no attention, the same applying for his other wives. She turned to Laito for comfort, but not before trying to make me take Shu's place as the next head of the family since he seemed to be disowned, and if he was not, it did not appear as if he had any intention of taking his rightful place as he aimlessly roamed through the realms in her search. I could never understand what drove him still, if that man could not find her he stood no chance whatsoever, but still he persisted on his whims.
He and I had not talked much, no one had talked much to each other actually, but that changed on the last night Cordelia tried to make me take over Shu again.
It was a night like any other, as I laid over one of the couches in the game room with my hands behind my neck and eyes closed while Laito played with some darts. It was a usual practice for me to spend my time alone, just being. I had decided to live for myself now, not tied to anyone else, not caring for anyone else, knowing this was my true character.
"Laito, my beloved son, would you please leave so that I can talk to your brother?" Cordelia said to Laito, who only smiled and disappeared. He had become such a loyal servant of that wretched woman, how incredibly disgusting.
"And what if, Mother, I have no inclination whatsoever to speak to you?" I asked her, not even bothering to open my eyes.
"Now, Ayato, that is no way to speak to your loving Mother," she tried, and I could hear the smile in her voice.
"Of course not," I said smiling, and then opened my eyes and turned my head to look at her. "Do let me know when you find that loving Mother of mine, since I was never able to find her myself."
At this her pleased expression vanished, only to be replaced by the usual scowl she gave me.
"What do you want?" I asked her, only to annoy her further, looking up and closing my eyes once more.
It worked.
In an instant she was right over me, demanding that I resume my studies, that I became the next head of the house, that I surpass Reiji and took a hold of what was rightfully mine as the eldest son of the Vampire King's first wife.
Seeing my unresponsive manner, since I could not care less about what she wanted, she began to threaten me.
"I can force you, Ayato! Remember what I can do to you!" she began to yell at me.
I teleported and in one second I stood behind her, looking straight into her eyes as she turned around surprised.
"What, you mean throwing me into the lake again?" I asked, my bad temper taking over me. "Locking me in a room so that I do your bidding? That will not work anymore on me, Cordelia."
"I can do worse things to y-"
"Get over yourself," I interrupted her. "Your hold on me dissipated a long time ago," I smirked at her crossing my arms over my chest.
