"I love you," I confessed to him, but it was nearly incomprehensible in between my sobs.
His eyes widened, and he froze in place.
"What did you say?" he whispered.
"I LOVE YOU," I screamed at him, and bust into violent sobs. "And it HURTS! I- I cannot. I just- You-" I blabbered incoherently, while crying.
"You love me?" he asked me, however he did not move a centimetre still.
"I do," I told him, looking at the ground and crying still.
He then placed his other hand on my other cheek, and lifted my gaze to his, finally moving. His eyes were not wide open anymore; they only held disbelief in them.
"You really love me?" he asked me then. "Like a woman loves a man? Not as friends?"
"YES YOU IDIOT," I shouted, "DO YOU THINK I WOULD BE LIKE THIS OVER SOME FRIENDSHIP LOVE? I AM CRYING! I HAVE NOT CRYED IN YEARS!" I told him in screams, yanking my face from his hands and placing them on my own once more, resuming my uninhibited cries. "It hurts so badly, Shu," my voice broke at his name. "And now I might never see you again. And even though I know you would never reciproca-"
"I love you," he confessed to me.
"You what?" I said, raising my head quickly, unable to understand his words since they seemed completely surreal.
"I love you too, Ayame," he said very seriously, grabbing both of my wrists and pulling them down.
"You do?" I asked, unable to believe it.
"I do," he declared.
"Like a man loves a woman?" I asked him.
"Yes," he chuckled at me asking the exact same thing he had asked me seconds ago.
"We both love each other?" I asked looking straight into his eyes.
"We do," he smiled brightly.
I then searched his face for any signs of insincerity, finding none.
He loved me. He loved me back.
I could not contain myself, and jumped forwards, tackling him to the ground while wrapping my arms around him and burying my head into his chest. He began to laugh and returned the embrace, and I began to laugh and cry at the same time, getting his shirt completely wet in the process. We remained like that for quite some minutes, just enjoying the moment, completely happy. He then moved his hand from my back to my head, and began to caress it affectionately, as we both calmed down.
"You have no clue as to how badly I have wanted to touch you so freely," Shu said, and I knew he was smiling even though I could not see his face.
I suddenly popped my head up and looked at him accusingly, and his eyes got clouded in concern, doubtful as to if what had just happened had been real, believing he might have understood wrongly. He relaxed when he heard what I asked him next.
"Why did you not tell me sooner?" I demanded, slightly angered.
We both raised ourselves and sat down in front of each other, holding each other's hands, desperate not to let go.
"Well," he explained, "one of the reasons was slightly selfish... I dreamed you would pick me without knowing of my affection for you, without being sure I would love you back... And the other and most important one was that I was afraid."
"You? You were afraid?" I asked im in disbelief. I did not know fear in Shu.
"Terribly so," he said, letting go of one of my hands to place it on my cheek, caressing it with his thumb lovingly. He then looked me in the eyes and said, "I feared you would not love me back."
