The weather being fine that evening, I had to go to the gardens as I usually did.
After the crowds dispersed I noticed Shu had disappeared amongst the guests, probably to go to the human realm to wait for me. It was my turn to leave as well, and so I began to excuse myself.
"Karl," I said to the Vampire King who stood next to me. "I am feeling quite flustered after playing in front of all those people. I think I will go outside for air for a little while. Would that be alright?"
"Of course, Ayame dear. You may do as you wish as long as you return to me soon," he smiled at me, something sinister playing in the back of his golden eyes. I did not give it much thought as I left for the huge doors that led to the gardens.
On my way there, I passed by Subaru, giving him a light smile, receiving a nod in return. That was our last goodbye.
Upon reaching the doors, I was stopped by none other than Reiji.
"Congratulations on your night, Ayame," he greeted me. "Are you sure you would like to go out tonight? It is a ball for you, after all," Reiji said politely.
"Reiji," I addressed him. "I am quite sure, I am only going out for some fresh air," I lied.
Going past him, I heard him whisper behind me.
"I could never stop you, why would tonight be any different."
When I turned around with a quizzical look he was no longer there. Giving it no second thought, I ventured into the garden. I made no stops walking along the flower path, until I reached its end. Of course, being my birthday, it was set to be that the Orange Calla Lilies would be in full bloom. I looked at them, taking in their beauty for one last, before continuing into the forest.
At the portal, I dared to look back, checking if I had been followed. Not being able to see or hear anything out of ordinary, I breathed out in relief, and ventured into the portal. Coming out to the all too familiar clear of the human realm, I relaxed for real. I was safe already, there was no way they would search for me in the human realm without any particular hint that I was there, and knowing they did not have any, I knew it was all over. I was already free from the Vampire King.
"Do not be so relaxed yet, my love. You still have a long way to go," said the voice of the man I loved from behind me.
Turning around, I saw Shu leaning against the side of the structure that surrounded the portal, and my heart raced as it always did when seeing him. He was brimming with beauty, as he smiled whole-heartedly at me. He opened his arms wide for me, and I ran to them, to him, grinning like crazy.
"Shu!" I said, colliding against his chest. "I missed you so much!"
"So did I," he returned. "And I will miss you most terribly after tonight. Ayame, you look absolutely beautiful, I have no idea how I will bare to part ways with you tonight. However, although this look on you does call to my more... manly side, I must say I do prefer you in a more natural state. I have loved you without any kind of make up for so long that I have grown to like you more without it. May I?" he asked then, gesturing to my back.
I realized he meant he was asking for permission to touch my back in order to embrace me since it was completely exposed, as the dress did nothing to cover it up. I blushed madly, embarrassed that he was asking for my confirmation.
"You may, but please do not ask for permission for these kind of things any more. It embarrasses me to say yes," I told him.
"You do look lovely when you bush," he mused, placing his hands on my bare back, his touch warm and melting, unlike his Father's.
