I sat on the bed and thought. Where could she possibly be? How can she even leave that quick and let alone without anyone hearing? I lay back on the bed and looked up at the ceiling. I glanced at the balcony door once again. I jumped up and quickly opened the door. What if she jumped? It was dark outside. I looked down into the grass. I could barely see anything. I turned away from the balcony to go back in. I looked up at the structure of the house and noticed there were a low roof and a high roof. Maybe she was on the third part of the house. I ran up the last flight of stairs and checked around. I still couldn’t find her. As I came back down the Aunt told me to come to dinner. I slumped down in my seat at the kitchen counter.

Aunt: You resemble him. *hands bowl of soup with crackers*

Diggy: Who?

Aunt: Joseph

Diggy: That’s my dad.

Aunt: I didn’t know that.

Diggy: Maybe one day you can meet him.

Aunt: Yeah…one day. Where’s Elana?

Diggy: I don’t know. I can’t find her.

Aunt: *smiles* I taught her that. Whenever I felt I was about to be beaten I would say “Hey let’s play hide and seek” and her eyes would light up with excitement to know we were playing a game. She knew how to hide really well. She could fit into cabinets and climb things. She could be isolating herself.

Diggy: But she also could have jumped off the balcony.

Aunt: That’s possible but she’s not lunatic. Sometimes when you think death is the best choice; a switch goes off that makes you reconsider.

Diggy: I hope she reconsidered…*eats a little quicker after a few minutes finishes* can you leave some dinner in the microwave for her just incase?

Aunt: Yeah

Diggy: Don’t worry I’ll do the dishes and make sure the house is clean. You look tired.

Aunt: I am. I’m going to bed so goodnight. Elana is somewhere in this house *goes to guest bedroom*

I paced the kitchen floor. I decided to go back to the balcony. I looked down again. Could she really have done this? I looked back up at the roofs. Her aunt said she could climb things. I got on top of the banister and stayed bent down. I slowly balanced myself as I stood up. I put my hands on the roof and looked over. There she was lying still on the roof with a blanket and pillow; staring up at the sky.

Diggy: Elana what are you doing up here?

Elana: Trying to forgive myself for what I almost did.

Diggy: What was that?

Elana: Kill myself. *gathers blankets and throw down to balcony then climbs off after Diggy*

Diggy: Why would you that?

Elana didn’t answer my question. Instead she went downstairs to the kitchen and sat at the counter. I grabbed the food out the microwave and she ate it slowly as I started washing dishes.

Elana: I was starting to lose myself; and you. Plus I don’t want to repeat what my mom did.

Diggy: I never left. I was just angry because I thought that. Your aunt explained what you been through with her. So I understand that you are this way. But why can’t you trust me?

Elana: I still do but sometimes I don’t. But let’s not talk about it.

Diggy: Alright. *dries dishes and looks around* so I guess I should be going home.

Elana: *stays quiet and washes out bowl*okay then.

Diggy: But as a friend I do have to make sure your safe. *follows her to her room and waits for her to get ready for bed*

Elana: *gets in bed* you’re that protective type of guy.

Diggy: *tucks her in and strokes her hair but then frowns* I should go *turns to leave*
