Chapter 7
Friday came around and the school was buzzing. Teachers and students were supposed to keep going as usual but school was pretty much put on pause.
Lunch was a mess. It started out pretty normal with everyone chatting at my table. Towards the end of the period someone slammed a text book to the ground, instantly everyone shut up. The class president, Tyler, stood on the table. He stomped his feet on the table and clapped his hands. Every one already knew what he was doing and joined in. Soon we all were singing "We Will Rock You."
Tara and Jessica stood on the table and pulled me up with them. We were stomping and clapping and laughing. I let it all go. I looked around there was people everywhere. Then I saw it, the teachers running in.
"What's going on in here." The teacher from the other day stopped us. Everyone froze, no one said a word. People started getting off tables and started finding their chairs.
I didn't get down, instead I said, "you got mud on your face, ya big disgrace, kickin' your can all over the place." Everyone looked to me.
"We will, we will rock you." Zach stood with two stomps and a clap.
"We will, we will rock you!" just like that every one was back to singing, clapping, and stomping.
Once the song was over I sat back down.
"You're crazy!" Tara shook my shoulders.
"You like, completely disrespected the meanest teacher in the school." Jessica screamed.
"What a bad ass!" Richie buzzed in.
"She just turned around and walked out!"
It was now pep rally time. This school was very team spirt heavy. Every one wanted to prove they loved their school. That wasn't the case at my old school. There most were all for it but some really didn't care and just wanted to get out of class.
"Are you ready to beat the Mustangs?" Tyler yelled into the microphone. Everyone goes crazy. "Now introducing the football co-captions, Zach Baton and Dylan Brynn." Zach was handed the mic first, he really hated talking on it.
"I'm Zack one of your co-captions, and I plan standing next to Dylan and leading this team to victory!" the crowd go wild. "Who's going to win?"
"Ravens!" they chant.
"Alright, alright, calm down." Zach says and everyone becomes quiet. He hands me the mic.
"I'm Dylan." Everyone stayed very quiet. They were staring at me. waiting from me to speak.
"Don't let it get to you." Zack whispers in my ear.
"I know what everyone is thinking, there is no way a girl could lead a team to victory," I say into the mike, "but have faith in me. I will not let any of you down. Things are changing around here."
They start to chant, "victory!" over and over.
After it was all over I walk out the gym and set against a tree that is at the back of the school property. I pick up a dead leaf and start to pick it apart. Once I couldn't destroy it anymore I pick up an acorn and throw it as hard as I can towards a tree that is off the property. I pick up another acorn and throw it.
"Dylan?" someone says.
"What?" I ask.
"Are you okay?" I look up to see Zach.
"Yeah... it's just, what if I can't do it." I say. He sets down in front of me.
"After tonight they will never think that because you are a girl you can't play football."
"How do you know that?" I ask.
"Because... I was one of the ones who thought the same thing. But the first time I saw you throw that ball my opinion totally changed." He says.
"Really?" I ask.
"Yeah. And as much as I hate to admit it I was jealous that you were a better quarterback than me."
"You think I'm a better quarterback?"
"Yes." He doesn't look at me.
"Thank you." I say.
"You're welcome." He says.
"Not just for that but for everything. I might still be in that locker if you hadn't found me." I say. He smiles and that makes me smile.
"Come on we should start heading to the bus." He says. "Captains sit together."
We are the last two to get on the bus. The captions seat in the first seat, Coach Kemp is setting behind the bus driver.
It was about a forty minute ride to the game.
"Ready to prove everyone wrong?" Zach asks me.
"Ready as I will ever be." I sigh.
"What day is it?" Zach and I yell.
"Game day." the team yells back.
"I said what day is it?"
"Game day!" they yell louder.
"Who's gonna win?"
"Ravens!"
"I said who?"
"Ravens! Ravens! Ravens!"

I braid my hair back. I realize I forgot my rubber band at home. I dig through my bag and find an old shoe string. I can make it work, I even tie a bow in it. I hide my hair in my helmet as best I can. Once while playing football in the backyard someone grabbed my hair and used that to get me down. It hurt and I broke his collarbone.
We started our warm ups. I was starting to get very anxious. I made a promise and I had no clue if I could keep it. I glanced to the bleachers that started to fill with students, parents, and teachers. I saw my mom, Dean, Gavin, and Tony. I felt the anxiety fall away. Dexter wasn't there, he never came. I should try to get closer with him. I'm getting distracted.
"Dylan?" I look to Zach, he slabs me on the back. "what day is it?"
"Game day." I replied.
"I said what day is it?"
"Game day!" the team yelled.

Authors Note:
Happy Monday.
Fun fact: I was playing backyard football once and some one pulled me by my hair. The next day we were playing again and I may or may not have accidentally broke his collar bone. I felt bad about it though.
I was in a pretty big reading slum but I finally pushed myself in to reading again.
