Shawn's refusal to hold my hand unnerved me. I pleaded with the heavens above that he wouldn't be angry.
"I should start from the beginning. As you know, when you left, I was heartbroken. A friend encouraged me to move on and she set me up with a potential date, Cameron." Shawn tensed. "I didn't care for him, but he was a distraction from you. We've been dating for two months. Cameron has told me countless times that he loves me, but I can never return the sentiment, and when you reentered my life, I felt sparks that I hadn't felt since I first met you. He didn't understand when I asked to remain friends. That was when that night he kissed me, trying to stir up some feeling with me. When it didn't, he knew I was leaving him for you, and that was his goodbye kiss. It caught me off guard. I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier. I thought you wouldn't understand."
He sat in silence for a while, not knowing the correct way to respond. "I love you and that will forever stay the same," was the only thing he said.
