>Alexa's POV<
The sound of thunder woke me up with a start. I lay still in bed trying to make sense of what I had just seen in my dream..... or maybe it would be more precise to call it a nightmare.
I was drenched in sweat and totally tangled up in my blanket. The room was too dark to make out the time on the wall clock. As if it heard my thoughts, a brief flash of lightning brightened the room for a split second. It was half past eleven.Wow.... It feels like a horror movie...
I asked the pessimistic voice inside my head to shut up.
Expecting a ghost to pop up from under your bed isn't exactly the best feeling to experience when you are feeling thirsty and to get water, you need to walk across the room.
After quickly considering switching on the light and dismissing the idea (my best friend, Stacey Mae, wouldn't really be quite pleased if she found me sneaking out of bed like Nancy Drew on a mission as it was a big day tomorrow) , I gathered all my courage and went to quench my thirst.
In spite of being totally blinded by the darkness, I managed to get myself a glass of water, thanks to the brief flashes of lightning. After drinking water I felt some of the tension dissolve from my mind.
Maybe I should get some air to help clear my head...
Without thinking much, I walked straight to the window and yanked it open.
A strong breeze blew into the room and an involuntary chill ran down my spine. It was raining outside and the rich wet smell of soil penetrated my nose. It was one of my favourite scents as it brought back memories from my childhood.
As I gazed at the sky, feeling nostalgic, a sudden lightning shattered my thoughts. It was the most intimidating thing I had witnessed so far.
Two lightning bolts shot out of the clouds and hit the ground simultaneously. It seemed like a pair of angry eyes were glaring at me from the skies.
I was too horrified to react to the deafening sound of thunder that followed. I could feel the vibrations from the ground but when I tried to scream no sound came out.
Suddenly I heard a bone-chilling scream and the lights of the room were switched on, blinding me instantly.
My eyes and ears are gonna thank you forever, Stacey. I thought sarcastically.
"Oh! Thank God it was you, Lexi!", she yelled.
"Who else could it possibly be?", I asked squinting at her and trying to roll my eyes at the same time.
She was brushing the hair away from her face. It looked like she was sweating too.
"I thought it was a ghost!"
Stacey looked like a frightened and embarrassed goat (maybe that's what goats look like if they could be embarrassed) . Or maybe a sheep. Her hair was a total mess.I let out an involuntary giggle and shrugged.
"Someone looks sheepish."She caught the pun and made a face.
"Someone looks like a scarecrow."Well....probably she was right.... I definitely don't look like Sleeping Beauty as soon as I wake up.
I couldn't stop from grinning ear to ear. I walked up to her with the glass of water in my hand.
"Were you thinking of offering that glass to the window in the middle of the night? I think it already has been watered abundantly by the rain. But I could definitely use some water to recover from the heart attack you gave me."
She was definitely pissed.
I handed her the glass and sat beside her on the bed.
As she drank water I couldn't help but notice that she looked a bit tensed." What's the matter?", I asked her.
" Nothing.... Just too anxious for tomorrow's trip." She managed a weak smile.
If I hadn't known her all my life, I would have probably believed that.
Tomorrow's trip was something we had all been looking forward to, from many years. We had packed our bags to go vacation on some pristine islands somewhere near the Bermuda Triangle. Our parents didn't know about this dangerous proximity since we told them we were planning to go to Paris for about a month. We had to lie or they wouldn't let us go to any "risky" place.
The very thought of going there never failed to give us an adrenaline rush each time.
So it was natural for her to be anxious. But something told me she was lying.
"Just spill it out. I know you are hiding something."
"Okay... I just had this really bad nightmare....you were running in a dark forest and some beast was chasing you... Then you stumbled on a branch and fell. The beast jumped upon you with a thunderous roar!"
She almost looked like she was about to cry.I hugged her tight and whispered into her ear, " Don't worry.... Nothing is gonna happen to us, Stacey. "
The second I uttered those words, a thunder clap echoed across the land, somehow more fierce than the previous one.
That's when I got this really bad feeling .
A premonition.Something savage out there was waiting for me!
