Bryson
My mother was pacing up and down the room like an animal. She was angrier than I had ever seen her before, and I knew that there was nothing else I could do about it but watch.
"So what the hell are we supposed to do if they are considering to kick us out?! We are the Genaro's! No-one kicks us out!" She was angrier than words could describe and I knew better than to try and stop her from ranting out.
My mother, Maureen Genaro, was a very dangerous woman. She stood at only five feet of height, but those who crossed her because they thought little of her were severely punished. She was born and raised to be ruthless, but her behaviour worsened once my father was mercilessly assassinated. It broke her heart, but instead of her crying her heart out, she picked herself up, promised herself some vengeance and never shed a tear.
"Who told you this?!" She barked at me and my closest cousin, Damien. He shook slightly on the spot, but knew not to fall apart in front of my mother. She wouldn't been lenient on his weakness.
"Actually we weren't supp..."
"... a snitch." I said bluntly, knowing that my mother didn't like people who didn't tell it to her straight.
"Which snitch?" She hissed.
"A close friend of Luciano's. He came to me for a lot of money and in return, he gave me legitimate papers. I know because I checked every page. Signed and initialed."
"Everything?" She whispered out ferociously.
"Yes. They want us out of the empire."
"FUCK!" She threw her glass of whiskey on the floor and it shattered loudly, making Damien shiver a bit. I had to admit, it was unexpected, but it didn't shake me.
"Calm down." I advised her, but she was hell bent on throwing a huge tantrum and smashing expensive things.
"No! Don't fucking tell me to fucking calm down Bryson! I won't do that shit! I want to meet up with Luciano and find out exactly why he's trying to get us kicked out of the fucking empire!" She screamed at me, but I could see the tears in her blue eyes, she was helpless and hopeless and the only way for her to show it was for her to scream.
My mother ruffled her pale fingers through her blonde hair and exhaled sharply, trying with everything in her to control her tears. The depression, anger, frustration and confusion had gotten the better of her and I couldn't do anything about it.
"It's fine! It's all fucking fine! We don't need the empire, we will survive with just the legitimate business on our side."
"Mom, you know that it's not enough." I said, but she barked at me angrily.
"DON'T YOU GIVE THAT SHIT! WE'LL MAKE IT WORK!"
I took a step forward towards her and instead of pushing me away like she did with the others, she let me hold her in my arms.
Knowing her, she hated to be weak. It made her feel like she was dishonouring her father, my grandfather, and she loved him too much to degrade him even in his ten year old grave. She couldn't find it in her to do that.
Far more than that, she felt like she was disappointing her husband, my father Michael. He was one of the respected leaders of the empire and ever since his passing a few years ago, things had never been the same.
