The principal's meeting ran late, so we sit for a good twenty minutes."Eh we'll be okay." Sam says laying back in her chair.
"Oh really, what if he asks to see our parents?" I snap at her.
Our parents left us as children, or at least that's what we figured. None of us had any memory of them, as they disappeared when we were infants, barely toddlers. They'd left us in the care of a kind, middle aged lady, Miss Jo.
She was one of the sweetest women in existence. The five of us lived in an old farm in the middle of Ohio. We grew up there. Miss Jo taught us not only school work, but how to use our powers as well. She told us how she knew our parents, and even gave us each a locket.
Each of our lockets is slightly different, but has the same flower crest, a Lilly entangled with a shield of vines and thorns with roses.
Miss Jo never really explained the lockets to us, she just told us to wear them, no matter what. We never really questioned this, we just continued on with our seemingly perfect farm life.
Then one day a strange man came to our door. He had dark glasses and a white collar suit. I sensed something strange about his presence. I also found it strange I couldn't read his thoughts. I couldn't read Miss Jo and my sisters' thoughts, but whenever we went into town or came into contact with anyone outside of the house, I read their thoughts like a book. This man was different, and different scared us all.
Miss Jo hurried us into the cellar, and told us to stay hidden until she came to get us.
"What if you don't come back?" Ana asked.
"Run." She said.
That was the last time we ever saw her. Hours passed and she never came, Sylvia made us each a weapon and we went outside to investigate.
There was no one in sight.
"What do we do now?" Ana asked.
"We run, find somewhere new." Sam replied.
Sylvia made us a car, and a fake license, and we drove. As far as we felt was needed. We were 11 and 12 with no one. We are now 16 and 17, and that is still our life.
"He will see you now." Mrs.Little says to us. She makes it sound more like a voluntary meeting rather than a forced conference. I admired her positivity, despite her complete distaste for her job,she still maintains a sense of cheer in her composure and voice.
Sam and I hop out of our seats and head into the room.
Mr.Green has been our principal as long as we've been in high school. He is a middle aged man with very little hair and a mustache that makes him look like the monopoly man.
"Hello ladies, please take a seat."
We sit in two plush seats, some of the nicest in the school.
"Why buy textbooks when you can buy Lazy Boy chairs for the trouble makers." I think to myself
"Miss Rose," We'd chosen Rose as our last name, due to the flowers on our lockets, "it seems you have hurt Miss Henderson. She is currently in the nurses office with a fractured collar bone." He says giving Sam a stern, condemning look.
"Good." Sam scoffs, giving him an amused grin.
"What a terrible little girl." He thinks, however his words don't quite match, "now now I feel as if a little sympathy is in order. Arabella why are you in here again?"
Mr. Green likes me, I'm quiet and never get into trouble, what more could a principal want?
"I supposedly helped her," I reply.
"And did you?"
"Nah, I just wanted to be here for her. She's my sister after all, and honestly she didn't do anything. Her facade may seem as if she doesn't care but she really does. All she wanted was to seem cool and she threw the ball a little too hard. She's really sorry."
"Yah I am." She suddenly chimes in.
"Well then I suppose I can let you off with a warning, stay out of trouble Miss Rose." He says calmly.
"Always do." Sam gives him an innocent smile and we leave.
"How did you..?" She says giving me a questioning look.
"All he wanted was for you to show emotion, he didn't want to deal with us anyway, he's dealing with a divorce, doesn't feel up to dealing with a dodgeball cat fight."
"You And your mind tricks, well I gotta get to History, see ya!" She says and speeds off in the other direction.
I began to head toward Physics when something in the front office window catches my eye.
It's a guy, with dark brown hair and green eyes. He is, in a cliché sense, gorgeous.
He's talking to the secretary when he turns around, quickly I duck behind a wall and head to class.
"He must be new," I think. It would explain why I'd never seen him around.
However it isn't his looks that gain my interest, it is something much stranger,
I couldn't read his mind.
