Anne's POV

I woke up at six in the morning. The light was coming through the curtains and I quickly used the fact that everybody was sleeping as an opportunity to read. So, I pulled a book out of my pillow case. Jane Eyre, my most favourite book. I haven't finished it yet. But, it is an exquisite book so far. I was about to start reading when I heard footsteps from outside the door, so I quickly hid my book under my pillow and pretended to be asleep.

The door quietly opened and I didn't dare to open my eyes. The figure came towards me and fear started to take over me. I felt the figure kneeling right next to me bed.

"Anne, wake up." a gentle voice whispered.

"Anne, please open your beautiful eyes." it was Gilbert.

I breathed in relief and opened my eyes.

"Hey Gil." I whispered sitting up.

"Hey Anne. Are you ready?" whispered Gilbert excitedly.

"I'm scared, Gil." I said.

"We will make it out of here together" said Gilbert.

"You promise?"

"I promise."

"Pinky promise?"

"Pinky promise." He said linking his pinky with mine with a smile.

He brought my pinky close to his face and pecked it.

"I promise." He said unlinking our pinkies.

"Then, I'm ready." I said and quietly stood up, getting my Jane Eyre book.

Gilbert gave me a look.

"What? I haven't finished it yet."

He simply chuckled and held my hand.

We slowly went towards the door and opened it. Nobody was awake yet. Everybody woke up around six thirty. So, we had like fifteen minutes to leave.

Gilbert might of noticed me hesitating. Because he tighten his hold on my hand and I turned and looked at him.

"If someone wants to hurt you. They'll have to go through me first." He said.

I heard a noise and I was about to scream when Gilbert shushed me. We silently crossed the long hallway and we run until, we reached the exit. The door, that after we would open it, we could've a life worth living.

I quietly opened the door and looked back at Gilbert. He nodded and we walked outside. Silently closing the door behind us. We walked out and we saw the milkman and I let go of Gilbert's hand and stared to walk towards the milkman.

"Fix your hair." I whispered to Gilbert before I went in front of the milkman.

He did what I told him and I was to speak when...

"AHHH. You gave me a fright little girl."

"I'm deeply sorry, sir."

"It's quite alright."

"What are you kids doing out here?"

"We have been adopted to a family and we were wondering if you could take us to the train station. Families orders. They said that they trusted you." I said.

"Let me talk to someone from the asylum first." Oh no, think quick Anne. Yes, I've got it.

"Maybe you were right, Gil." I said and looked at Gilbert giving him a look that said 'follow my lead'.

"I told you." He answered.

"Excuse me. What are you talking about?" asked the milkman.

"The women working here said that you shouldn't take us, because you can't handle a responsibility." I said.

"Of course I can and I'll show them. Of course I'll take you to the station. Come on, you can sit." He said, offended.

I smiled kindly and Gilbert looked at me shocked as I sat down.

"What? I read this technic in a lot of books. I wondered if it worked in real life as well." I said.

"That makes sense." He chuckled as he sat down next to me.

The man then walked back to his carriage and sat down too.

"I must warn you. We will stop to a lot of houses until we get to the station." He said.

"No problem at all. We can help." said Gilbert.

"I'm sure I'll keep myself busy. There's so much scope for the imagination. Do you think is romantic when two people reunite in the rain?" I asked as the carriage started moving.

"What do you mean?" asked the milkman.

"Well, just think of a guy running after a girl for years but she never acknowledged him. She only said a polite 'hello, how are you?' to the guy and because they didn't speak that much. They went to separate ways, until one day the girl had just broken up with her boyfriend and the same guy comforts her when he sees her outside crying in the rain and he shares his umbrella with her. Then, they go into a warm place like a coffeehouse and they spend hours talking and then the girl falls in love with the guy and then there is a plottwist but at the end they find their way back to each other."

"Wow. Did you just think that?" asked the milkman.

"Yes." I answered, excitedly.

"You get used to it, the more time you spend with her." said Gilbert, lightly pushing me.

"You mean you're lucky you met me." I said.

"Of course I am lucky I met you. Who would I annoy? The other girls think that I'm saying 'I love you' to them when in reality I'm only asking for them to pass me the salt." Gilbert laughed.

"That actually happened." I chuckled.

"Awww. Are you two dating?" asked the milkman.

I was pretty sure my hair matched my cheeks right now.

"We're just friends." said Gilbert.

"Hey, we are the bestest of friends." I said, acting offended.

"We are kindred spirits." I said.

"Are you a kindred spirit?" asked Gilbert.

"I don't really know the answer to this question." answered the milkman. Gilbert and I just nodded.

After that, we stayed silent. Well, Gilbert did. I was imagining that there was a fight between two handsome princes for the princess hand in marriage in the middle of the woods.

After a couple of hours. We finally reached the train station. Me and Gilbert got off the carriage.

"Thank you for your assistance." I said smiling, giving Gilbert his bag whilst Gilbert nodded in agreement.

The kind man raised his hat and left.

Me and Gilbert made sure that we had all of our things and got into the train.

"How did you bring our things?"

"I put them in the man's carriage yesterday. I figured we would barely have any time to leave this morning... It was the right thing to do."

"Why didn't you tell me? I was looking for my things all day."

"What's the fun in that?" I said and looked out the window whilst Gilbert got a book out and started reading.
