We finally reached the church and walked inside. Gilbert gave me a soft smile and started walking to the male seats whilst me and Marilla walked to the women's side.
Marilla sat at the very end and I sat next to a girl with a pink dress. It had puffed sleeves, how beautiful. She noticed me looking and she turned around and said.
"I'm Ruby Gillis, I don't believe we have met before." she smiled kindly.
"Nice to meet you." I said, returning the smile.
"What's your name?"
I was starting to freak out. If I said Cordelia, then by the end of the day. Ruby would probably find out that I lied and that's not a way to start a friendship. But, if I said Anne, then there would be one more suspect. So, I started speaking loudly hoping Marilla would interrupt me.
"My name is-"
"Child, keep quiet. We're in the church." said Marilla.
I gave Ruby an apologetic smile but to be honest. I've never been happier. She just nodded in understanding and turned to look in front of her at the priest.
I did the same but, I couldn't focus. My mind was going on through all the possible scenarios that could happen after the church. Would me and Gilbert live in the streets? Would they allow Gilbert to stay and not me? He is presentable and I'm not... Would they allow us both to stay? Okay, I doubt it. I was so occupied with my thoughts that I hadn't realized the people standing up and leaving the church.
Is it too late to disappear? Can't I just magically become invisible or something? Or even end up in a ship and go away and spend days on the ship, without anybody knowing of course.
"Are you ready?" asked Gilbert.
I gasped.
"You scared me." I said.
"Sorry, princess but we need to go." said Gilbert.
"Who is that?" said a voice behind me.
Ruby Gillis.
"That's my friend." I said.
Gilbert kindly shook her hand.
"What's your name?" asked Ruby, looking at Gilbert.
Gilbert immediately panicked and looked at me.
"Oh my God. Ruby we've got to go. We promised Marilla to help her with breakfast and if we don't we will be in big trouble." I said, literally running out the door, while pushing Gilbert.
"Jealousy looks good on you, Shirley." said Gilbert with a smirk as soon as we were out the church.
I lightly blushed and said.
"I wasn't jealous. You were literally begging for my help. So, I was kind and offered you my assistance." I said, trying to walk away.
"Hmmm... If you say so." He said as he appeared next to me with the same smug look on his face.
As we kept on walked we bumped into someone.
"Woah, be careful." I heard a voice I knew all that well.
"I am Cole." said Cole shaking Gilbert's hand with a kind smile.
Then, he looked at me and froze but immediately covered his shock with a smile.
"I am Cole. It's a rare pleasure to meet you. Are you new?"
I nodded and walked away. Leaving a shocked Gilbert behind.
"That was rude." said Gilbert as he caught up to me.
"I'm sorry." I said.
"It's alright. Why did you run away though?" asked Gilbert, looking at me.
"Ummm... I know him."
"Really?" asked Gilbert, looking back trying to remember him.
"I do but I don't think you do as well."
"He is not....." said Gilbert catching on whilst looking at me with wide eyes.
I nodded as tears welled up in my eyes.
"He is.... And he definitely knew me because he froze when he saw me. I can't believe this is happening." I said, as a teardrop rolled down my cheek.
"Anne, Gilbert. Me and Matthew made our decision-" said Marilla as she walked up to us with Matthew. As soon as she noticed my tears she got a bit worried.
"Anne, are you quite alright?" asked Matthew.
"I'm fine." I said and put on a fake smile.
"Are you sure?" asked Marilla.
I just nodded and turned to a worried Gilbert. He just held my hand. This was our way of letting each other know, that we were there for each other.
I squeezed his hand and looked back at Matthew and Marilla.
"Whatever you decide. It's okay. The way we acted was immature." said Gilbert.
"Yes, it was." agreed Marilla.
"But, you're still kids so we will forgive you." said Marilla, looking at us.
My smile got wide and I asked.
"So, does it mean we can stay?"
"Yes, but on one condition." said Matthew.
"Of course." said Gilbert.
"No more lies." finished Marilla.
"Deal." said me and Gilbert in sync.
I quickly let go of his hand and hugged him. Laughing out of happiness... until the happy tears decided to pay a visit.
I turned and looked at Marilla and Matthew and hugged them, dragging Gilbert in the hug.
"Thank you so much. You won't regret it. I can clean. I can cook... No, I can't cook. But, I'm willing to learn." I started to ramble after we let go of the hug.
"First rule, no talking nonstop." said Marilla.
I immediately closed my mouth and nodded.
"You can talk all you want to me. I don't mind." whispered Gilbert.
I just elbowed him on the arm.
"Second rule, you won't stay in a room alone. Except if it's the kitchen or the living room..." said Marilla.
We again nodded.
"Third and last rule for now, I want you to always be kind and respectful. Especially, in front of adults... Especially, Misses Lynde."
I didn't know who she was, but if Marilla pointed her out, then I knew better than to get on her bad side. Gilbert nodded and Matthew said.
"Well, let's go home then." with a smile and we started walking away.
I looked to my left to Cole before I left and he was already looking at me.
I instantly looked in front of me.
"Everything will be okay as long as I am here, and I'm not planing on leaving." whispered Gilbert as he kissed my forehead and held my hand once again.
From that moment I knew that as long as I had Gilbert Blythe in my life. Then, I had nothing to be afraid of.
