Adeen

Ragged breaths of my wife fill the room as she fights to inhale and exhale comfortably in her sleep.

The beeping of the heart monitor and her snores are a great concoction for a headache. Although, the pounding actually may be from all the stress.

I look across the room as a knock taps and the overused hinges creak with the weight of the heavy swinging wooden door.

Feet dressed in rubber crocks squeak in our direction against the linoleum floor.

"Hellooo," the shadow on the other side of the curtain announces.

A few fingers appear and draw the curtain open and a man in blue scrubs with a stethoscope hanging around his neck makes eye contact with me.

We nod at each other, he glances at Tiana and sees she's asleep. He looks at me again and extends a hand.

"Hello, I'm Ben Dawn, I'm Tiana's PM nurse."

We shake, I introduce, "I'm Adeen, Tiana's husband."

He smiles, we do a final shake and retract hands.

"Very nice to meet you," Ben says. Then he turns his attention to Tiana again.

"Sleeping soundly I see," he says and walks to the wall in front of Tiana's bed where a white board hangs.

He erases then writes his own name and information. When he's done he turns to me again and speaks.

"I'll be back to check in later," then he disappears behind the curtain.

I sigh, slowly hang my head back and stare up at the ceiling.

"Why Tiana..." I whisper, she snores in response.

In my lap, my phone vibrates, look down to see Malina's calling again. I sigh, flip my phone over and close my eyes. I don't feel like talking right now, I don't even know what to say besides, I'm sorry.
