ever since maya was little she had suffered from anxiety and panic attacks. once her dad had left, she was always paranoid about losing people in her life. she had lost many friends in the past and many people she cared about. sometimes she would just get very anxious for absolutely no reason and it sucked. there was no one that she knew that could help her handle her anxiety. no one knew what it was like. no one except lucas.

when maya met lucas, she had no clue that he would be the only person in her life that would be able to help her breathe again. she just thought he was a giant huckleberry that she would always make fun of. the first time that she was panicking at school, no one noticed besides lucas. they were in history and maya was stressing about the test that she had next hour. she stayed up all night studying but she still felt like she didn't know enough of the content. even with sitting behind her, lucas could tell something was off. her small hands were tangled in her golden locks and it seemed like her breathing was heavier than usual.

"maya, are you okay?" lucas asked from behind her. maya shook her head with a groan. he looked up at mr. matthews before getting out of his seat and moving into maya's view. "what's wrong?" he asked putting his hand on her shaking leg. her eyes immediately moved from her paper to his hand but he didn't move it away.

"i-i don't know anything. i'm f-freaking out, l-lucas." maya said biting down on her lower lip and and looking at lucas with panic and worry in her eyes.

"did you study?" he asked.

"so s-so much. bu-but i can't remember. i can't remember anything." she stuttered.

"okay look at me." he said but she didn't look at him she just looked back at her paper. "maya, look at me." he said grabbing her head and forcing her to look his direction.

"what?" she asks.

"breathe with me."

"what?"

"breathe with me. deep breaths in and deep breaths out." he said and she nodded. they sat there at the front of the classroom just breathing with each other until maya stopped shaking. "better?"

"not good." she nods.

"i didn't ask if you were good. i asked if u were better. are you better?" he asked again.

"yeah." she said softly.

"okay. tell me what your test is about." he told her. maya went on to tell him what it was about with no stutters and with no lip bites. she didn't have to look at her study guide once and at the end she could see a proud smile appear on lucas's face. "hey. guess what?" he asked with a smile.

"i got this?" she said with an unsure tone.

"you got this." lucas said firmly.

"i got this!" she squeals as she flings herself into lucas's arms catching him by surprise but he still manages to hold her small frame against his. everyone's focus had finally shifted over to them and they were all quite surprised to see them embracing in the middle of the classroom.

"thank you huckleberry." she murmured in his ear.

"for what penelope?" he asks.

"for helping me with my anxiety attack. i'd be full on sobbing right now if you didn't help me calm down. so thank you." she says breaking their hug.

"there's no need to thank me. it was all you. you have control of your mind and your body." he smiles.

"you still helped though. so for that i owe you at least a little gratitude. no one's ever been able to help me like that before."
