lucas was extremely worried about maya. she hadn't come to school in days and wasn't talking to anyone. she had disappeared from all social media, she was ignoring everyone's texts, and she wasn't seen anywhere. it was like she had dropped off the face of the earth, and lucas didn't like it at all. he had missed his blonde beauty that lit up the room whenever she smiled. he missed hugging her small body and lending her his letterman jacket whenever she was cold. she always refused but he knew she secretly wanted to wear it. he missed everything about her and he couldn't figure out where she was and why she wasn't in contact with anyone.

it was a friday night when lucas gad has enough of this. he hadn't seen maya all week and he was starting to get really worried. so after school he got in his truck and went to maya's house. he knew her mom wouldn't be home so there was no one to make excuses for her. he needed to see her. he needed to hold her. he just needed to know she was okay.

when lucas got to maya's house he knocked on the door. he knew maya wouldn't answer but his momma raised him with manners. so after a few minutes when maya didn't answer, to no one's surprise, he used his key to get in. you may be wondering why he has a key to maya's house, well her mom gave it to him for these reasons exactly. on days when her mom would be working a lot, she trusted lucas to come check on her and make sure she was okay and healthy and that's exactly what he was doing now. lucas opened the door and found maya's apartment dead silent. there wasn't even a muffle of noise from any appliances or anything. it was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. lucas began to think maya wasn't here until he heard a faucet running in the bathroom. he walked into maya's room to see her coming out of her attached bathroom. however she didn't look like his maya. you could see the bags under her eyes from a mile away. her usually bright blue eyes were red and her messy mop of hair was tied up into a bun. her small and petite frame was engulfed in one of his sweatshirts and her biggest pair of sweatpants that she owned. she didn't look like herself and lucas just knew she didn't feel like herself either.

"w-what are you doing here?" maya asked picking at her fingernails, something she did when she was nervous.

"i came to check on you. i'm worried about you, maya." lucas said standing up and walking over to her making her look up at him.

"there's no need to worry, lucas. i'm fine." she says as a fake smile spreads across her lips.

"maya i know that you aren't fine. i can see it in your eyes. what's wrong? why haven't you gone to school all week or texted any of us?" he asks. maya doesn't say anything she just takes a deep breath and then sits back down on her bed.

"i can't." she whispers and lucas can hear her voice crack.

"what do you mean?" he asks sitting next to her. he notices that she keeps picking at her fingers so to make her stop he grabs both of her hands in his. "talk to me tiny."

"i can't get out of bed besides to go to the bathroom and even that's a struggle. it exhausts me to do anything. the thought of getting dressed and going to school makes me want to cry. and texting you guys and being on social media is so mentally exhausting. i haven't even eaten in days. i can't do it or anything anymore." she says as tears threaten to spill out of her eyes.

"when did you start feeling like this?"

"i've always felt like this but it got real bad last week. i don't know what's wrong with me lucas." she cries.

"nothing, absolutely nothing, is wrong with you. you're maya penelope hart. i promise you, nothing is wrong with you."

"then why am i feeling like this? why can't i do anything? why is dying the only solution that's on my mind?"
