Deduction
Drop something near someone to test how aware of their surroundings they are. Even if they don't pick it up, slight head movements, eye fluttering, or bodily twitches can indicate external awareness. Absence of any of these signs, contrarily, usually indicates deep thought or an absorbing line of thought.
