20-If You Say So

"So?" Connor asked after I zoned out for a few minutes, bringing me back to reality.

I opened my mouth to say something but the words wouldn't come out. I was stuck. I didn't want to say no and break his heart, but I thought I'd be going with Percy.

"Connor, I don't know what to say," He didn't stop smiling at me, hoping I would go on with the talking.

"I mean, it's not that I don't want to go with you, but I was hoping Percy would ask me,"

"Annabeth, I'm really sorry to say this, but that's not gonna happen,"

I just stared at him. Excuse me?

"Why-what do you mean?"

"Erm, well, he allowed me to ask you to Prom, so I guess he won't do it himself," He shrugged. He just said that as if it was nothing but to me, it was everything.

"I don't know, he's my boyfriend, I can't do that to him,"

Connor nodded sadly and I hugged him. I had no idea he thought of me that way.

"This is really sweet, but right now, I need to know if Percy really isn't going to ask me, I mean, it's not that I don't trust you, cause I do, you're a great friend!" As soon as those words came out of my mouth, I almost face palmed myself. Annabeth, you idiot, you don't call someone that just asked you out to Prom a friend!

He nodded and smiled at me. I sighed and waved goodbye to him as I walked home.

I didn't want to be mad at Percy again but why would he not ask me to Prom? He knows I care about that kind of stuff, and I've been waiting for him to ask me. Jason had already asked Piper and Nico said he was going to ask Thalia tomorrow. He probably had his reasons, so I didn't get mad. I made my way to his house instead.

I knocked on the door and Olivia opened up instantly, she must have been watching TV next to the door.

"Oh hey Annabeth! It's been long since we had you around here,"

"Hey Olivia, is Percy here?" She nodded multiple times and called his brother, who was swimming outside. He came running when he heard I was at the door and almost slipped because of the water dripping from him.

He grinned and came out to the porch as he closed the door behind him.

I caught my breath. He was trying to dry his hair with a towel and I couldn't help but stare at his amazing abs. I forced myself to look at his face and noticed he saw me staring. Oops.

"I'm right over here, you know," He pointed to his face and laughed. I blushed a deep shade of red.

"What's up?" He asked, worried.

"Percy, we need to talk...about prom," He scratched the back of his neck and looked down at the ground when I said that word.

"Annabeth, I can explain,"

"Yes, please explain to me why you allowed Connor to ask me to prom, why he said that you weren't going and why-" He cut me off.

"Annabeth, I can explain." He repeated and I listened," Even though it hurts to see you with someone else that's not me, I want you to go with him. I can't go myself because I have an important swimming event the same day, so since I've seen you with Connor a lot lately and he seems to have a crush on you, I told him to ask you. It's better if you go with someone like him, than not going at all. I don't want you to miss prom because you can't go with me."

"But Percy, I don't want to go with anyone else that isn't you. Connor is not the first guy I turned down because I was waiting for you to ask me. Luke asked me too,"

"Great. That bastard."

"Percy, we are a couple now. If you're not going, then me neither. I will go and support you in the event."

"No, Annabeth. Do me a favor and go to prom. Have fun. With or without Connor, I don't care. Just go, please."

I nodded sadly. How was I supposed to go to prom with Connor while Percy was busy with some swimming competition?

He grabbed my chin and lifted my head up. He got closer, and closer. I looked into those big green eyes as they stared into my grey ones. Then, he kissed me. It wasn't any kiss, like the ones he gives me in school everyday. It was romantic, full of passion; as if he was trying to say 'I'm sorry I can't go to prom with you'. It lasted long enough until we were both out of breath.

"I'll go to prom with him if you want me to, Seaweed Brain,"

"I'll try and come back for the last hour or so, promise."

"If you say so..."
