Cold bit Percy's nose as he walked in New York's freezing weather by himself. A month ago it would have been different, he would have had Annabeth.
Walking down 29th and Park, I saw you in another's arms. Only a month we've been apart, you look happier.
A beautiful laugh carried in the breeze and when he looked across the street, it was her. She had her head thrown back in laughter at something her new boyfriend, Luke, had said.
Saw you walk inside a bar, he said something to make you laugh.
Percy remembered the last time he had seen Annabeth she was in furious tears.
I saw that both your smiles were twice as wide as ours. Yeah you look happier, you do.
And there was nothing Percy could do about it. He had broken her heart, ripped it up and tore it to pieces. At first he thought she just needed time but it was different. He had lost her.
Ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you. But ain't nobody love you like I do. Promise that I will not take it personal, baby. If you're moving on with someone new.
He quickened his pace until they were out of sight and leaned against the wall. Flashes of memories ran through his mind. Decorated the Christmas tree with her, eating ice cream in the summer, stolen kisses, late night phone calls, and her beautiful gray eyes sparkling with love.
Percy had gotten a call from his best friend, Grover, the day Annabeth left. "Hey man, you'll be alright. I know she meant a lot to you but eventually you'll be over her. There's more to life than just Annabeth," he had said.
'Cause baby you look happier, you do. My friends told me one day I'll feel it too.
But Percy knew the truth, Annabeth was his end game. There was no one else. "I know, Grover. Thanks for calling,"
And until then I'll smile to hide the truth. But I know I was happier with you.
Percy pushed off the wall and started toward his apartment, trying to outrun the lump in his throat. He skidded to a stop in front of his door and fumbled with the keys. Tossing his jacket onto the couch, he flopped down onto a chair in the corner.
The place was a mess. Food wrappers, dirty laundry, and photographs were everywhere. Percy had taken all the photos he had of Annabeth and put them where they were taken. Some where outside and got blown away. Most were inside their, no his, apartment. He figured that if everything reminded him of Annabeth anyway, might as well put a little piece of her where it belonged. Percy had to remind himself constantly that the photographs belonged, and she did not.
Sat on the corner of the room, everything's reminding me of you. Nursing an empty bottle and telling myself you're happier, aren't you?
Percy took a sip of some leftover Cola and thought about the day she left. She had come inside in tears and Percy knew immediately that she knew. She knew that he had cheated on her.
"I thought you loved me," she said, her voice cracking. "And you go off and break everything we have into smithereens. How could you?"
Percy had leapt out from his desk chair and stood in front of his girlfriend. Her blond hair was windblown and tear tracks ran down her face. Annabeth's arms were crossed and she stood trembling, but defiant in the doorway. "Annabeth, please, I can ex-"
"What?" she shouted. "Explain what you did?! I already know because she gave me a phone call when I was at work,"
Percy had stood with his mouth gaping, fumbling for an apology as she grabbed a bag and started putting her stuff into it. "I wasn't thinking clearly! I swear it only happened once I was an idiot and I wasn't thinking straight. Please Annabeth, don't leave,"
She didn't speak to him anymore and silently grabbed her things and left with her mouth set in a furious line.
Ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you but ain't nobody need you like I do. I know that there's others that deserve you.
He jerked back to the present and stared at the Cola in his hand. Furious rage boiled through him and he flung the can across the room where it collided with the wall and burst. He wasn't angry with Annabeth, he could never be mad at her. He was furious with himself. How could he be such an idiot.
But my darling, I am still in love with you. But I guess you look happier, you do. My friends told me one day I'd feel it too. I could try to smile to hide the truth. I know I was happier with you.
Memories whirled in his head. Grover comforting him, Annabeth storming out, seeing her and Luke with such big happy smiles. She seemed so much happier without Percy. But Percy knew he would always be happier with Annabeth.
Baby, you look happier, you do. I knew one day you'd fall for someone new.
A chocked sob caught in his throat. He knew that Annabeth would find out somehow and that she would leave. She hadn't answered any of his calls or texts. But he decided to try one last time. Percy pulled out his cracked phone and started typing.
"If he breaks your heart like lovers do, just know that I'll be waiting here for you."
