"I just don't get it," Percy groaned with his head in his hands. "Who cares if x and y get mixed up sometimes? It's just some letters and numbers junk."

Annabeth took a deep breath and tapped her pencil on the sheet of paper in front of them. The library was quiet except for a few other study groups working on various schoolwork. She tightened her ponytail and glanced at the worn-out student beside her.

"It does matter. This is the same math that engineers use to build the subway that all of the city takes and to construct this building so we can learn."

Percy muttered something under his breath, and Annabeth promptly ignored him and turned back to the math work. "So, moving on to derivatives,"

And so went the rest of the hour. Percy squeaked chair wheels and doodled on his Converse while his blonde tutor tried desperately to engage him in the material. After what felt like an eternity, the clock hit 4:30, and Percy sat up.

"Well I hate to leave at such an interesting part," he said while swiping the piles of paper into his bookbag and cramming them in. "but I have this actually important thing called practice. Check you later, princess."

BAM! A hand came flying down on the table, and Percy found himself facing a pair of stormy eyes about to break into lightning.

"I am not your princess, and I am sick and tired of spending my afternoons with some jerk who doesn't care if he flunks out or not! I have better things to be doing than listen to you whine for an hour." she huffed.

The taller boy met her gaze defensively. "Well, it's not like you're a walk in the park either, cupcake. I could be warming up or hanging with Grover and Tyson instead of hearing about the importance of dead people in a book."

Annabeth snapped her head around from tucking her pencil case in her book bag. "I don't care if you end up an underpaid camp counselor after failing high school, but your performance right now reflects on me. I just don't understand why you don't care about any of it."

Running a hand through his shaggy black hair, Percy blew out a slow breath. He didn't meet her eyes, and she picked up her books and started towards the entrance of the library. Suddenly, a hand caught her arm. She turned and saw the swim captain stopping her from leaving.

Their eyes held and a low hum of energy tumbled in Annabeth's stomach before he spoke.

 "You're wrong."

"Excuse me?"

"You're wrong," he repeated. "I do care about this because I care about swim and the money to get to college. So, I guess we kinda need to work together on this, okay?"

Annabeth stared down at the strong hand still wrapped around her bicep, and Percy pulled back awkwardly. He shuffled his feet and waited for the blond to respond.

She looked at him intensely, trying to gauge his intentions. He seemed genuine, and he really did need help with his grades. "Alright. But you have to promise to actually try in class and pay the right amount of attention to these tutoring sessions."

Percy shrugged. "I'll work on it. But," his eyes flashed mischievously, "you have to do something too."

A sick feeling crept into Annabeth's chest, and she stepped away from her student. "You better not be up to any funny business Jackson because if you are, I will no-"

"Jesus girl no!" Percy laughed as her cheeks flushed pink. "Nah, I may be flunking classes, but I am not a douchebag. I was talking about a little quid pro quo."

Annabeth raised an eyebrow. "You know what that is?"

"Nope," Percy grinned at her. "But it seemed like the right big word."

The blond girl let out a small chuckle. As annoying as Percy was, he had a way of wiggling into the smallest cracks in her amour and light a laugh. It was both utterly stupid and remarkable.

"I want you to go to one of my swim meets and cheer me- I mean- the school, on," Percy said while picking at his chipped nail polish. "You should really see what's important to me and experience the vibes of a swim meet. It'll win you over."

Annabeth thought for a minute and looked into those stupid sea-green eyes. "Fine." she sighed, and Percy perked up like a puppy. "But you have to come to an academic tournament of mine."

"Hey, hey, hey," Percy held up his hands. "Now you have two, and I have one. I'm not great at math, but I know I need one more to make it even." His tutor dipped her head in agreement. "So, I was thinking; you don't seem like you get out much."

The pink in Annabeth's cheeks was back. "Excuse me??"

"I'm just sayin' that's what it looks like from over here!" Percy laughed a little and pulled her a tiny bit closer, just enough so that she could see the cheeky smirk on his face. "If I go to a tournament, you come to a party with me."

Annabeth stared blank-faced at her classmate. "A party? Really?"

"Yes, really."

"Well, in the name of a good, well-rounded education, I guess that would be alright. Just this once thought," she added in response to the grin on Percy's face.

"You have yourself a deal, Wise Girl"
