No one knows who created the step counters or how they knew what would happen. Every little band just showed up when a baby was born. Some were blank, some had millions of steps, but everyone had one.
Percy's favorite activity when he was younger was watching the numbers go down. He would run, skip, jump, or hop around just to see the number tick down. His was lower than most, Percy's soulmate would meet him early.
Grover's still had a while to go. "It's alright," he had said. "I'm focusing on something more important right now."
Mr. Bruner always wore long sleeves that covered up his wrists. Percy thought maybe he was embarrassed because he couldn't take any steps. Even Nancy Bobofit had one, which made him feel bad for the other person.
It was always counting down the steps. When Percy and his mother went to the beach, when a big storm blew over them, when Grover suddenly became a goat, and when Percy slew the Minotaur.
Through a dizzy haze, Percy saw his steps were now less than 10 away from 0. He groaned. "I can't pass out yet," Unfortunately, his body had other plans. When he woke up, there was a blond girl just his age sitting on his bed.
She has studied him intently like he held the answers to the secrets of the world. "You drool when you sleep." was all she said.
For the next several weeks, a soulmate was at the very back of his mind. Saving the world was at the front. His new friend Annabeth still looked at him like that. It wasn't until the three of them were in the back of a zoo truck that he remembered his band. Grover was asleep and Annabeth looked like she was too. So Percy peeked at his wrist and saw the glaring 0 taunting him.
"Ha ha," it said. "You can't have your mother and your soulmate met you when you were zonked." It wasn't fair, he didn't want to be a half-blood. Then he had a brilliant realization. It was all so clear! Annabeth had been near the border when he and Grover had staggered across.
"Annabeth, wake up! I've got something important to ask you," Percy whispered as he poked her. She grunted and sat up, rubbing sleep out of her eyes.
"What do you want kelp head." she yawned. Percy gulped and looked into her steely gray eyes. He was about to find out his soulmate.
"Who was at the border the night I came to camp?"
Annabeth's eyes flicked to his band. "Percy," she began. "You didn't feel it buzz when you reached zero?"
He rolled his eyes. "I was passed out after I dragged Grover past the tree. But you were there! You can tell me who it is!"
Annabeth looked at him the same way she had at the beginning like he held all the answers. And there, in the back of a smelly, run-down, cheap truck, Percy knew.
...............................................................................................................................................................
She was looking at him the same way. Wrapped close to each other and plunging into hell, Annabeth still looked at her soulmate like he was the whole world. And he couldn't do anything but hold her back and plead to the gods that if she dies, they take him too. He may have found his soulmate at twelve, but he desperately wanted to grow old with her.
And so, as the wind howled and noxious fumes grew, both of them looked at each other the exact same way they had when they were traveling the country at twelve years old, a little scared, a little unsure, but content with the other half right in arms reach.
And the soulmates were complete
Okay I got a random spurt of inspiration. Here's something two days in a row! I'm not really sure what vibe this part gives off?? But the emoji grammarly gave me is the little looking up kinda sad and smol and shy with a little frown one? Anyways have a marvelous day my lovelies!
