Montauk had always been a special place for Percy. It held nothing but memories of love in a safe, sea salt coated house. His mom had shared that love with Poseidon and Percy wanted to do the same with his special person.
So with a duffel bag tucked under her arm, Annabeth showed up at Percy's door one Friday afternoon. She really didn't adore the beach as Percy did. She really only started to look forward to coastal trips after she met her boyfriend when they were 12. Nevertheless, here she was.
"You ready to go?" Percy asked with a grin as he stepped out of the door. "This is gonna be so fun!" He bounced down to the car and did a dumb little dance to make her laugh.
Annabeth walked over and threw her bag in the back. "I'll pick the music."
And the two were off down the road to the vacation spot. Annabeth hadn't been to the revered beach house. It was almost like it belonged to a different guy than the one she knew. A pre-demigod realization Percy who only worried about school and Smelly Gabe, not primordial beings trying to kill him. So when he extended the invitations, Annabeth couldn't just say no.
Percy was acting differently than usual. He yelled the lyrics to their songs louder, bounced his leg more, and definitely went over the speed limit. "You belong with meeeeeeee you belong with meee" he sang dramatically.
"Dork," Annabeth smiled but grabbed the dashboard. "Hey, hey slow down!"
He cut across another lane of traffic to peel off to an exit. Rocks and gravel crunched as they pulled into the driveway. It was a surprisingly warm day with only a few fluffy clouds decorating the sky. The ocean looked even a little greener than usual, and Annabeth realized with a tingly feeling, it was the exact same shade as her boyfriend's eyes.
"I got your bag," Percy called over his shoulder with the keys to the house between his teeth. "We can have bunk beds!"
Annabeth rolled her eyes good-naturedly knowing full well they always ended up right next to each other. They had gotten into a comfortable rhythm of holding each other at night during their war days and hadn't quite broken it. It didn't keep the nightmares away, but it did help.
She walked up the stairs and was leaning on the porch when Percy came back outside. He took a deep breath of sea air and visibly relaxed. His fingers still tapped on the railing, always moving. "Wanna go down to the shore?"
Holding hands, the pair picked their way down. The sun had just begun teasing the horizon and it scattered sparkles across the ocean. Annabeth leaned her head on her boyfriend's shoulder. "I could stay like this forever," she murmured.
Percy, to her surprise, didn't say anything. She looked up at him but he was looking out at the sea. The wind played with his dark hair and he absentmindedly pushed it back.
"Percy?"
He started a little and looked back at his girlfriend. "Yeah, sorry. I was just thinking." Then, he sat back a little and let go of her hand to play with a pebble.
Annabeth's stomach began to turn. He was acting really, really weird. The whole day, he hadn't been looking her directly in the eye. She pushed a ridiculous notion to the very back of her mind but it clung like a burr. Wisely, she decided to test the waters. "Do you have anything to tell me?"
Percy's green eyes snapped up to meet hers and filled with panic. "Annabeth..." he dropped his face into his hands. "What do you know?"
She was going to throw up. Vile was pushing up into Annabeth's throat and tears pricked her eyes. He had obviously done something she was not supposed to find out about. "I guess you'll just have to tell me." Her boyfriend scooted back to turn face-to-face with her. He reached for her hands but she snatched them back. "Don't."
With nothing but sorrow on his sweet face, Percy sighed. "I'm so sorry. I just thought it was the right time to make that sort of change but-"
"Who was it." Annabeth snapped. "Rachel? Calypso? Reyna? Gods, I can't believe I didn't see this coming!"
Percy's shoulders dropped and he went slack-jawed in realization and horror. "Wait no no no. What are you thinking I was doing?"
"You're really going to make me say it?" she cried and kicked herself for letting her voice crack. "I cannot believe you. How could I have been so stupid?" Annabeth stumbled up from the sand and tried to walk, but her body felt like it was melting. Her world was crashing down around her.
Percy jumped up and started to follow her. "Hey, Annie, it's not what you think." He was almost laughing. "You don't understand."
She wasn't listening, just replaying everything in recent memory, trying to find a different pattern of behavior. Suddenly, she felt herself being jerked back by her shoulders and spun around.
"Annabeth, listen," her boyfriend said sternly. She was too woozy to even snap back and just sank back down. "You are completely wrong. Gods- it's not-" he stopped and took a deep breath. "Gods, Annie, you own my heart. Nothing will change that."
Grey eyes locked to green and both were teary. "What?" she croaked.
Percy rubbed the back of his neck and took her hand. "This is not the way I really imagined this moment going, but it doesn't matter. Annabeth, I love you with everything that I am and-"
"Shut up!" she screeched. All the pieces clicked into place at once. Percy wasn't cheating, he was doing quite the opposite. "Shut up," Annabeth yelled again while sniffling.
Her boyfriend smiled softly and scooted so that his knee was under him. "As I was saying," Annabeth snorted. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want all of the beach trips, sticky kid hands, smelly laundry, long nights, and good morning kisses. Annabeth Chase, will you make me the happiest man alive, and do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
By then, she was crying too hard to speak. Annabeth only nodded and threw her arms around his neck. Percy grabbed her just as tightly and rocked back and forth gently. "I can't believe you thought I would cheat on you," he said with a hint of hurt.
Annabeth drew back and took his face between her hands. "I overthought it way too much in too little time. I can't believe that this never crossed my mind!"
Her boyfriend, no, fiance, pulled her forehead to his. "You and my mother are the most important women in my life. I'm stupid sometimes, but I would never be that much of an idiot to give you up."
In a moment of wonderful peace and elation, Annabeth kissed Percy deeply and then just smiled. He smiled stupidly and reached into his pocket. "I have a ring for you. It's okay if you don't want to wear it."
In confusion, she held the ring up to the fading sunlight. It was of thin, twisted strands of gold with a green-hued salt-water pearl entangled on top. The stands were twisted much to close in some spots, and awfully loose in others. The pearl was tilted and the ring was not a perfect circle at all. "It's beautiful," Annabeth whispered. "I love it." She wasn't lying. In her eyes, she had no better possession.
Percy perked up and slid it onto her finger. "I made it myself! Tyson helped a little with rolling out the strands, but I did the rest. You will not believe how possessive some oysters can be!"
The pearl twinkled slightly in the light. "We're gonna get married."
Percy pulled her closer and buried his face in her shoulder. "We survived literal hell together. How do you think you'll hold up while planning a multi-being acceptable wedding of the decade?"
Okay, guys, this chapter was not my best but I felt the writing bug and had to get it out! I know it is very surprising for me to post this close together, but here it is anyways. I love you all. Have a blessed, comforting, peacemaking, heart-renewing day loves!
