"Ouch! Percy could you at least try and not pull my hair?"

"Sorry sorry"

It was a rainy day at Camp Half Blood and Percy came up with the stellar idea that he should do Annabeth's hair. She never really took time to do anything with it besides throwing it up in a messy bun.

"No don't move!" Percy yelped as his girlfriend slightly tilted her head. She sighed and rolled her eyes.

This had been going on for what felt like forever. She could tell that her blond locks would need detangler after this.

"Aaaaaand we are done!" Percy said happily and spun Annabeth around to face the mirror. She couldn't believe her eyes. It was.....beautiful. The bulk of her hair was swept into an intricate twist. The little fuzzies she could never get to cooperate framed her face like a picture. Everything was smooth, but loose. Free, but not tangled. Tiny flowers had been carefully placed among the  masterpiece. There were enough of them that it looked purposeful but not too many that it looked cluttered.

"Percy- I can't even- how did you learn how to do this!" Annabeth gasped.

He smiled and rubbed the back of his neck. "Well when my mom and I used to go to the beach, her hair would get really frizzy cause of the ocean. And if it was rainy, we would spend the day inside and I would do her hair sometimes for her." Then his face fell. "Gabe hated it. He said it was too sissy and I shouldn't be doing girly things like that. But I didn't listen because it made my mom happy."

Annabeth murmured, "Well thank you for showing me you amazing hidden talent. I love it."

Percy nodded and looked away. "Yeah. It's alright." He stopped there but Annabeth could tell there was something else on his mind.

"What's wrong? You can tell me," Annabeth's stormy gray eyes welled with concern.

The black haired boy looked down. "When I was little, before Gabe went away. I used to think it was my fault, that if I wasn't there, then they would love each other."

Annabeth put her hand over her mouth. "Percy, it wasn't your fault, it was never your fault."

He blinked back tears and continued. "I would go and hide on the opposite side of the apartment but I could still hear them yelling. No matter where I went they were always yelling." His shoulders started to shake. "It got so bad they wouldn't even talk to each other. They-" His voice cracked. "He would send me back and forth to deliver messages because they didn't even want to see each other."

Tears pricked Annabeth's eyes. And she wanted to tell him to stop but it was like they both were frozen.

"Some nights, my mom slept on the couch and Gabe slept on the bed," Tears slipped down his face. "I didn't have any siblings to talk to or play with. It was just me."

Percy put his face in his hands as his body shook. "Most nights I would go sleep on the couch with my mom, even when I got older. When Gabe went away gambling I always did it. It was just too quiet."

Annabeth started crying. She knew it was bad, but Percy never talked about it. She always assumed he just had pushed it out of his mind.

"I- I used to" Percy stopped and took a shuddering breath. "I used to want to run away. But where could I go, I was only three."

She couldn't stand it anymore. Annabeth scooted closer and hugged Percy tight. They both cried and rocked back and forth.

"Listen to me" she whispered. "I am never going to let that happen to you. We may be young and I don't know where this will go, but if we make it, I promise I will never do that to you. I'm never going to walk out, i'm not going to give up. I'm not going to yell at you so loudly that the neighbors can hear."

Percy's shoulders shook and fresh tears slipped down both of their faces. "Hey listen to me" Annabeth continued. "If you ever, ever, find yourself in a spot like that, you come find me." Her voice choked. "You come find me okay? And I will get you out of there,"

They both sat there in silence, soaking in each other's promises. Sniffles echoed through the cabin and Annabeth could feel that her shirt was soaked with tears. But she didn't care.

Percy's quavering voice broke the silence. "I love you,"

Annabeth smiled as tears rolled down her cheeks. "I love you too dork."
