Where did all these puppies come from?

It was a disgusting day in New York City. Rain drizzled miserably and everything seemed to be gray. Even the bright taxi cabs had lost their shine. Annabeth was hunched over, trying desperately to protect her papers from the constant rain, when she saw a wet cardboard box. The ink on the side had washed off and it was not unusual to see a random cardboard box, but something caught Annabeth's attention. The box was making noises.

She knew not to ignore instinct and instinct told her to look inside. Annabeth gasped. A shivering, wet, cold lump of puppies were huddled in the corner. A little brown and white one looked up and whined pitifully.

"Well I can't just leave you here." Annabeth murmured. She reached down to pick up the box but as soon as she picked it up, the soggy material fell apart and the puppies were sent tumbling.

"Ah crap, " she growled and looked around for something to put the little guys in. Something that had sides so they wouldn't fall out but wouldn't collapse. Annabeth looked up. Her umbrella.

Mourning the loss of her dry papers, she scooped all five of the puppies into the sturdy umbrella. Her apartment wasn't far, she just needed to hurry.

                                                    .................................................................

Percy whistled a tune as he shook off his whale umbrella and stomped off the mud from his boots. With a grin, he opened the apartment door and was prepared to be welcomed by his girlfriend. Instead, he tripped over something soft and fell face-first into the hallway.

Wet tongues licked his eyeballs open. Percy groaned and peered around to see puppies. Two licking his face, one on the very top of the sofa, one eating some chicken nuggets, and one wrestling his sock.

Annabeth skidded into the hall from the kitchen and smiled nervously. " Welcome home?"

Percy sat up and one of the puppies chomped at his scarf. "Ann, where did all these puppies come from?"

The blond scooped up a wandering pup and explained the predicament to her boyfriend. He just stared at the puppy eating his sock. "But why in out apartment? Why not the shelter?"

"Because they were wet, cold, and frightened," Annabeth huffed. "And they needed a warm, dry place to stay and someone to give them love."

Percy ran a hand down his face. He was never going to win this argument. In defeat, he asked, "What are their names?"

His girlfriend brightened and held out the one she was holding. It was black and white with a little spot of brown. "This is Todd."

She held up a fluffy white one. "This is Jigglypuff."

Then, Annabeth scooped up the brown and white one eating his sock. "This is Rumble."

"This is Minnie." she said while petting the smallest one with white paws and black fur.

"And that," Annabeth pointed to the one hanging onto her boyfriends scarf, "is Monty."

Percy picked up Monty and stared at his little puppy face. He had never been allowed to have any pets. Even if his old apartment did allow them, Gabe never would have had any animals.

He remembered bringing home a stray cat once, it was sleek and meowed loudly. He had named it Goldfish because it loved to bat at the ones in the window of the pet store. When Smelly Gabe found Goldfish, he grabbed her roughly. Goldfish scratched his hand to ribbons and he threw her out the window. It wasn't a far drop to the next balcony but Percy still wanted to run down and check on the stray.

Monty gave his nose a lick and Percy looked into those puppy eyes. Then he looked at Annabeth, then back at the puppy. "I guess it wouldn't hurt to have some more company around here."

Judging by the grin on his best friends face and the warmth he felt inside, Percy had made the right decision to adopt some kids.
