The next day, Jughead picked me up to head to the sheriff's station to talk to his dad about the Ghoulie recruitment. Part of me was hoping FP could talk Jughead out of it completely, but then it was possible he would think it's a good idea too.
"The Ghoulies, they're a drug club," FP ranted after Jughead explained the idea. "They can't be house trained." He moved to shut the door from prying eyes and ears.
Jughead shook his head. "That's the Gargoyles, Dad. The Ghoulies just need a strong leader. I can be that, but I'm going to need a carrot that only you can provide. It would be a lot easier to get the Ghoulies to join us if I could say that we had immunity from the law now that you're the sheriff."
"Did your mom put you up to this?" FP asked suspiciously. "Not even in town a week, and she's already making moves."
"Coming to you with this ask was my idea," Jughead assured. "And I know it's risky but-"
FP shook his head. "You're damn right it's risky. I find it hard to believe that you want to align with a gang that almost killed you, that was led by a man who treated her the way he did," He argued as he nudged his head towards me. Thank you. "You sound crazy, Jug."
"If we don't bolster our numbers, we're going to go extinct," Jughead continued, "And from the sounds of it, Paul isn't involved anymore, hence the reason they're leaderless in the first place because we all know Penny wouldn't stand a chance against him. Dad, come on."
Mr. Jones looked at me before sighing disappointedly. "As long as I don't have to sign anything, yeah. You can tell them Sheriff Jones hasn't forgotten where he's coming from. It'll be live and let live."
It seemed like another nail in my coffin as FP agreed to Jughead's proposal. I wanted to roll my eyes and stomp out of here like a child, but I was trying to be reasonable, for my own sake.
"Savanna," FP called out as Jughead and I were walking from his office. He waved me back, giving Jughead a pointed glare to go on before the two of us were left alone. "Look," He sighed and stood up from his desk to walk towards me. "I can tell you're upset, and I don't... I don't blame you, kid. I don't want this to happen, but at the same time, I can't sit around and watch the Serpents disappear from the map."
I nodded. "Mr. Jones, I get it. There are no hard feelings, I promise. As much as it sucks, this is something I've gotta handle on my own. And if that means disappearing from the Serpents for a while, then..." I took a deep breath. "It might have to happen."
He nodded and placed a hand on my shoulder reassuringly. "I don't want you to think I'm purposely putting you in this position. As a father, the last thing I want to do is to see you have to go through anything like what you've already experienced."
"No, I wouldn't think that at all," I promised. "It's not anyone's fault. Sometimes these things just have to happen and now, I've gotta figure my way through this mess but it'll be okay."
