"You did it!"My ears were still ringing from the bomb but Katie grabbed my arm and pulled me into a large bear hug. I could just barely hear her. The land around the school was decimated, the ground resembling a ditch and trees no longer standing. The school itself, the airstrip Sam would use, was completely fine. Thinking of Sam, and utterly exhausted, I dropped the force field that had just saved us all.
"Everyone, come down to the main entry with your things," Michael's voice spoke over the speaker system. "Any hurt or young go to the front."
"Let's go," I said, pulling out of Katie's hug. "Thanks for being there, by the way."
I went down the stairs at a swift, yet much more reasonable, pace. My body felt like hell. Every joint and muscle throbbed with pain, my head felt as if my skull had cracked, and to top it all off I was exhausted physically and emotionally.
"I didn't do anything," Katie said. "I can't do force fields."
"You were there to make sure I didn't kill myself," I said bluntly. "I'm not dead, so, you did what I needed you to."
We walked onto the tile floor of the main entry and it was chaos. Parents were mostly keeping the calm, and it seemed that Jamie was roughly enforcing Michael's words, but it was clear that everyone was utterly confused and scared.
"Go make sure no one is left behind," I said to Katie, sure that Michael had already delegated the task but not willing to risk it. "Fast."
She nodded and ran off, leaving me to find Michael standing and holding my laptop to talk to, presumingly, Sam. He was wearing a new pair of clean jeans but I knew he was still hurt. The burn I'd used to clean the bullet bound hurt like hell, it'd broken back open when the bomb hit and was bleeding again, and I wasn't standing on mine. I was going to lecture him on that and ask what was going on but he beat me to it.
"Sam just landed," Michael said. "He brought three pilots, one for the plane he brought and two extra, but it looks like there's only one plane there with enough gas to make it. It'll be a tight fit with parents but we should all make it. You stopped the bomb, didn't you?"
I blushed a little at the obvious awe in his voice and he kissed me, the not-so-quick peck making me blush more. Sam coughed on the screen and I looked over at him for the first time.
"I was just asking if he wanted us to come to him or if you were coming to us?" Sam asked.
The walk to the small airport wasn't long, but it was out of the protections of the school. I frowned and Michael waited for me to decide. "We'll come to you," I settled on. I could protect us on the way there, and the chances of cops getting to us quickly through the utter pandemonium outside of the school were low. "I'll make sure the path is clear."
"Don't use another force field," Sam warned.
"I'll do whatever I have to," I said, not giving a damn about his warning. Everyone was in danger because of Michael and I's plan, I wasn't about to let them down.
"Your pupils are large, you're bleeding from your nose, and I'd be willing to bet you're aching all over. Don't over exert yourself," Sam said. his voice was stern and caring, like a father. The kindness only served to piss me off. Who the fuck did he think he was, fathering me?
Okay so he was literally my father but still.
"Fuck off," I snapped and shut the laptop lid. I looked at Michael and took a deep breath, glad he wasn't giving me the same lecture despite his obvious concern. "Can you walk?"
"I'll manage," He said.
I nodded, "Okay, let's go."
Michael yelled for everyone's attention and it seemed that Jamie had already sorted out parental and older-student defense along the edge of the group. I gave her a nod in thanks, glad she was leading that, it left Michael and me to stay in front and deal with anything that popped up.
We walked through what was actually a fairly pretty nature trail to get there. The serene quality was terrifying, I couldn't believe we were safe until we were out of the UHA's grasp. Regardless, it was peaceful and the nervous chatter of students fell on the ears of sweet sounding birds.
"Put your hands up, now!" A small SWAT team appeared out of the trees and pointed their guns at us. Immediately I put up a force field and Jamie and her protectors did their best to calm down the crowd. By now everyone had heard or seen the bomb, and knew that I'd stopped it. They knew I could stop the bullets from the guns they pointed at us but it didn't make it any less terrifying.
"You hid in the trees, knowing a bomb was going to kill you, on the off chance that it didn't so that you could arrest us?" I asked incredulously. "What the fuck is wrong with you people?"
"Hands in the air where I can see them!" The SWAT team leader yelled again and I narrowed my eyes.
"Shoot me," I growled, noticing the fear in the SWAT team with pride. "I dare you."
Suddenly time slowed down. Trigger happy humans shot at us and the bullets hit my force field, never connecting with any students and falling harmlessly. I smiled at the awe and shock on their faces until a familiar figure jumped out of the bushes, in front of my shield, and got shot by bullets intended for me.
Pain and rage took over instinctively and flame burst out of me. The beautiful nature walk around us burned to ashes in an instant, all of the guns they held became too hot and leather-looking red skin indicated that the SWAT team was burned, if still alive. It didn't matter though, none of it mattered, because the woman who had raised me lay dead at the ground before my feet.
