Spencer's POV.

"I'm going to assume that everything would be too much, so explain to me exactly how you're so intelligent. Or a genius, as the rest of the team has told me." Chloe asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

"Well, I suppose that I've just always enjoyed learning new things. Extremely quickly, at that." And it was very true. I just left out the part about my parents always fighting and me not being able to stand it, so I'd hide in my room and either read, write, or try to learn new things. It was something that I'd done from a very young age. Once my father left, my mother didn't have anyone to wake her up in the mornings so she'd end up sleeping until late afternoon. This is what made me very independent. I had to start doing everything on my own. Including making my own school lunches, packing my own bag, and getting myself to the bus on time. In the afternoons, she'd be too tired or she'd have a headache, and wouldn't be able to help me with my homework. Yeah, my childhood wasn't exactly a walk in the park, but if it hadn't been that way, then I would have never graduated college at the age of fourteen, and I would have never been the team's genius, or even on the team as a matter of fact.

"High school must have sucked for you." She let out a small chuckle, and she was right. It did suck. I'm sure that there are much better words than that to describe how my high school experience was, like dreadful, unpleasant, horrendous, etc. "Yes, it did. Extremely, to be completely honest. I would have never thought that a bunch of sixteen year olds would use a scrawny nine year old as their punching bag." I smiled, although it did hurt to recover those old and awful memories. The brunette furrowed her brows, her lips curving into a frown. "That's horrible, Spence."

It was just a nickname. One that JJ always called me, and one that my mother had called me since birth. However, it was just...different to hear it come out of her mouth. Not a bad different, though. I don't even think that she had realized that she called me Spence instead of Reid. The thing was, JJ and my mother are close to me, and I had just met Chloe. Not even Morgan or anyone else on the team would call me Spence. Just Reid. It was always just Reid. Although when she said it, I felt like we had been friends for years. Not just less than twenty four hours.

"Well, understand this," She continued as she wrapped her fingers around my forearm, "all of those people that you went to high school are probably stuck with a job that they hate, while you're working for the BAU and saving lives. I think that it's easy to say that your life is significantly better than theirs." Chloe gave my arm a squeeze like she did on the plane before resting it back on the table. "Plus, you're hanging out with me right now, how much better could life get?" She laughed, obviously kidding. I laughed along with her and we spent the rest of our time there just like that. Telling each other stories and laughing.

And to be completely honest, it was one of the best nights that I've had in a while.
