Finally at the first bus stop I sit and wait at the bench. I'm glad I wore my hoodie today because as I was walking it looked like the clouds were rolling in. Just as I look up to the sky faint rain drops fall on my face. Ah a light sprinkle wonderful.
Taking my backpack off my back and putting it on my lap I zip it open and grab my worn out copy of Wuthering Heights. I'm not sure why it's my favorite book maybe because of the ending or the way it's written. Either way it's my favorite. Opening to the last spot i was on i begin to read.
A few chapters later and I start to worry when the bus will be here. Checking my phone it shows 4:39pm that means the bus has been over 40 minutes late now.
"Are you fucking serious.", shoving my book back in my backpack I've decided I'll walk home today it might be almost an hour and a half walk but it's better then waiting here for a bus even longer then I've already have. I could've been at least half way home by now.
Slinging my backpack over my shoulder I start to walk. About 30 minutes later I'm sitting under a tree taking cover from heavy rain that set in about ten minutes into my walk. Me being me said fuck it and kept walking till I realized everything that means anything to me is in my backpack.
That's now soaking wet.
As I sit here under this giant oak tree still getting wet since most of the leaves have fallen off due to it being fall. I wonder what I did to deserve such a miserable afternoon. You know what I'll just embrace this my stuff is already ruined why not right. Stretching my legs out into the sidewalks gutter my shoes get drenched from the water flowing down hill. Extending my arms back as if basking in the sun I let the rain fall on me.
Washing away any worry there currently is swirling in my mind. A car door and the sound of feet splashing in the rain has me open my eyes.
"Are you crazy? Do you need a ride?", Maddox stands in front of me with his arm shielding his eyes from the rain pouring down on him. "Well? Do you?"
My hair stuck to my forehead and cheeks I blink trying to look through the rain that drips into my eye. It kinda burns. "We've only met today I don't know if I trust it. Stranger danger you know?"
"Are you serious? You're soaking and I just offered you a warm, safe ride home. And you're going to pull stranger danger on me? Its better then basking in the rain plus I still need notes from you."
Looking behind him at the car he drives I wonder what type of car it is. Im not a car person so I wouldn't know. A warm ride home sounds so much better than walking. Should I though?
Standing to my feet I grab the hook loop of my backpack and walk pass Maddox to his passenger side door, open it and get in. The heater is on in the car and my body instantly begins to shiver from the two different temperatures hitting my body. As I look out the window Maddox stays standing there in the rain looking up to the clouds eyes closed.
He must have an appreciation for rain too. Adjusting the air vents to all face me the drivers door open. " Alright then where to?" Clipping on his seat belt he points to mine. Ew he's one of those a click it or ticket type person huh. "9203 Webster Road. I'll warn you now, its not the best neighborhood, so you can drop me off a few blocks from my house."
"No thats ok." He punches in the address into his phone and places it on a little thing that holds it in front of him so he's not looking down at his phone for directions. The car ride is silent the entire time neither of us wanting to talk to the other. So naturally I look out the window watching as the nicer house slowly turn into old run down ones that indicates i'm closing in on my home.
Passing by the bus stop I would normally get dropped off at we round the corner and boom I'm home. Picking up my soggy backpack I unzip it and scrummage through it till I have all my notebooks on my lap. Opening the car door I step one foot out while zipping my backpack back up and slinking it on my right shoulder.
"Here." I hold out my notebooks that are in a variety of colors. "They're a little wet. Dry them off for me but that's everything you'll need. Math is the purple notebook, red is reading/literature, the baby blue one is social studies, and the green is science. I want them back tomorrow." Taking them in his moose sized hand he only nods.
"Is that a yes?"
"Yeah I'll try my best to copy all this down in a night. But if anything I'll get them back to you on Sunday maybe later in the day though." Ugh rolling my eyes internally I nod back at him. Getting out the car the cool breeze and the rain that has slowed down again makes me shiver.
"Fuck." Shutting the door Maddox speeds off. Walking up the sidewalk leading to my front door, pleading today isn't a bad day to be home. Crossing my fingers I squeeze my eyes shut hard and say a little prayer. As my hand inches to the door handle its rattles on its own, before swinging open.
"Who was that? Who dropped you off?" Malcom stands in front of me his eyes red from being high. Oh I forgot to mention he's a drug dealer. He says only weed but I'm pretty sure it's worse then just that. You would think him dealing would bring in money but he gets fucked over a lot.
"No one some new kid helped me get home after I got stuck in the rain. Excuse me I'm just going to head to my room." As I push past him trying to not get caught in his cross fire I slip on a beer bottle. Damn wrong day to not work.
