"Like what?" She asks me looking straight at me. She's not afraid to look someone in the eyes and that's bad. It's bad because she shows her emotions through her eyes. I can see the sadness that's shows in them. She carries herself as if nothing is ever wrong.
Not her eyes no. They show you what you can't see physically.
"Let's start simple. Favorite color?" I ask taking a drink of my water.
"Grey."
"Grey?"
"Yeah grey. But not like any grey. I like the grey that colors the sky when rain is about to fall. Storm cloud grey." Ivy now taking a drink of her water too.
"My turn to ask a question." She doesn't ask but states it while placing her water back down. "Why did you move back here?"
She jumped right into that didn't she. Huh.
"Uhh-uh ha," scratching the back of my neck her brown eyes just drink in my motions. "Sorry. If it's personal that's ok. Um favorite color for you too then. What is it?" She mumbles the last of her sentence.
"It was red. Simple I know but I think it's changed recently to brown."
"Brown?" She questions raising one eyebrow. "Like a poop brown or?"
Laughing a little I shake my head. "No, more of a milk or dark chocolate brown color. It's quite beautiful if you ask me." She just laughs a little more, but stops once the waitress walks up to us with our food.
Both of us saying thank you we eat in silence for a while. I'm glad Ivy isn't one of those girls that doesn't want to eat around you. You know those girls that nibble on their food when you know they want to scarf it down. Or the ones who order salads only to pig out at home.
Not ivy no.
From what I've heard from Jacob I know she's lost her father and since then she's changed a lot. He said she's never had many friends because that's not how she is, but when her dad died she completely shut everyone out except the teachers.
When others would try to talk to her, that she would put her headphones in or simply walk away. He said even Adrianna her long time friend since little girls had a hard time only getting a few words or sentences from her. Maybe if I asked her. Would she tell me is the question.
"My aunt died." Pushing my finished plate away she stops chewing her food for a second. "Well my mom died. Giving birth to me. My aunt raised me and she died a bit ago. About three weeks before I moved here."
"You don't have to tell me. Maddox I understand how har-,"
"It's ok I want to tell you." In all honestly I haven't told anyone not even Jacob the reason I moved back to Silver Falls. "She had breast cancer for three years. On an off chemo therapy. Before that we lived with my father till I was seven. Then something happened to my grandfather so my aunt packed my bags and we moved to her house in California."
"Then like I said she died. Not from her returning breast cancer but from a ruptured brain aneurism. We thought it was from the cancer but it wasn't it. So I moved back with the last remaining family member I have. My father."
She swallows the last bite she has in her mouth then gently cleans her mouth with a napkin before looking at me. "I haven't had to go through the pain of having to help someone fight off a sickness or anything but you're a strong person Maddox to do so." Her hands once on her lap now folded neatly on the table. One reaches out for me.
Placing her hand on mine it's warm. Small barely covering mine but it radiates this heat from it. I turn my hand over and rub my thumb across her knuckles.
"Thanks Ivy." Her brown eyes look into mine. I see her lips move but I don't hear anything. "Sorry what?" I ask.
"My dad died." She says looking away from me trying to pull her hand out from mine, but I don't let her. Not wanting to lose the heat that comes from her hand I softly squeeze as she tried pull it away. "He was in a car crash and passed away from internal bleeding. That was a few years back. I don't think you could ever really get over a death of someone you love."
"Why do you say that?" Asking I cocoon her hand with both of mine. Trying to give some type of support to keep going.
"Because it feels like it still happened just yesterday." Looking away from me her eyes drop and you see them line with tears.
Not letting go of her hands I use my elbows to help me get up from where I'm sitting and I slide next to her. Taking one hand from hers I wrap it around her shoulders.
"I understand." Hugging her into my chest she let's go of my hand, and wraps them around my torso. She doesn't cry or anything but just hugs me.
Hugging her back something in my peripheral vision catches my attention. I see the waitress coming to approach us with the bill but stops before she gets to us. She mouths she'll come back in a minute and I nod at her letting her know that's ok.
"You're different Maddox Silver. A good different." Ivy shoots back the same words I had told her a couple days prior. Causing me to smile. An actual genuine smile, something that i haven't done in a while.
