Dally woke up an hour later, turning his head towards Darry instinctively. He saw Darry asleep in his bed and their son in what looked like a plastic bin on wheels wrapped in a pastel blue blanket on the opposite of Darry's bed, his big sister nowhere to be found. As Dally rubbed his eyes, a nurse walked in and quietly shut the door behind her. She noticed Dally and walked over to him, the blonde stood. He remembered her name was Violet. Dally stretched out his arms as Darry snored softly, his exhaustion had hit him full force from having two children, let alone one. Violet smiled sadly at Dally, she had news about Daisy, but she wasn't sure how the couple would take it.
"How are you guys doing?" She asked softly, looking past Dally to Darry asleep in his bed, Dally looked back with her and smiled lightly, he was so proud of him.
"We're doing just fine, thank you, Violet.....how's Daisy, any news on her?" He asked. Dally was deeply worried about their daughter, she wasn't even a day old. Violet seemed hesitant, a hint of sadness was present in her soft orange-brown eyes.
"She's still in surgery, the hole in her heart was worse than they anticipated. She'll be in the NICU overnight once they're finished, there's no telling how she'll be afterwards. All we can do is help he through, one day at a time." She explained. Just then, the two heard Darry shift in his bed, a sign that Dally learned meant Darry was about to wake up. Dally looked towards Violet, silently pleading for her to leave. She left quickly to give the couple time together, she knew Darry would rather hear the news from Dally than her. Darry yawned, sleepily looking around the room in a tired daze-like state.
"Hey Dally.....where's Daisy?" He said, instantly noticing only their son in the room as his faint smile faded. Dally sighed sadly, he knew Darry wouldn't take it well, he himself was having trouble staying strong.
"Darry..." He started. "Daisy's still in surgery. Violet said she'll be in the NICU over night and they don't know how long she'll be in there. They don't know how she'll be after, but they said it's worse than they thought. After the surgery, I don't think there's a whole lot more they can do." He said, looking over Darry for his reaction.
Darry's eyes welled up with tears almost instantly. He was scared beyond belief for their daughter in just a few short moments, but his hormones were still everywhere, meaning Darry's reactions wouldn't go as smoothly. Dally rushed over to Darry's side and held him tightly, letting the tears soak the shoulder of his shirt as Darry gripped onto Dally. He sobbed loudly with every jerk of his shoulders.
"I-I wa-ant my brothers..." Darry sobbed. He was beyond devastated, never had he felt this much fear and overwhelming worry in his entire life. Daisy was now only two hours old and Darry still hasn't held her. He only got to hold their son, and he couldn't describe how scared he felt. He was scared for Daisy's heart, her time in the NICU, the possibilities after her surgery, he was scared for everything.
Dally left the room as soon as Darry let go of him, rushing down the hall to see the rest of the gang talking in the waiting room. As Dally walked up to them, facing them, he tried to keep his guard up. But they noticed how red his eyes were from crying, they noticed the damp spot on his shoulder from his lover. Soda and Pony stood up on instinct, a dreadful feeling of foreshadowing consuming them as Dally approached them.
"D-Darry wants you guys, he's a mess..." Dally trailed off, his voice cracking at the beginning. While Soda and Pony sped down the hallway to Darry's room, Dally sat down in a chair and put his head in his hands. Now the only people left were Johnny, Steve and Two-Bit.
"I don't know how we're going to do it, guys. She'll be in the NICU for I don't know how long, I don't know how Darry's going to do it." Dally muttered, his eyes glossed, denying any tears to fall. The four of them sat in silence, just waiting, waiting for Darry to calm down. Soda walked up to Darry's room door, Pony right beside him. The pair could hear crying from the other side, this wasn't like any cry the two brothers have ever heard. This cry was sad, scared, angry and loud. Neither brothers have heard Darry cry like that. He was always supposed to stay strong for the three of them, but this time, Darry had finally broke.
Soda opened the door and let Pony walk in first, he followed soon after. They saw Darry sitting up in his bed with his head in his hands, his body shaking with every sob that escaped his body. The pair quickly rushed over to their oldest brother's side, giving him the comfort he needed. Pony quickly hugged Darry and let him cry into his shoulder, Soda joining the hug as he rubbed Darry's back. They felt so bad for their brother, they didn't need to know what was wrong with their niece, they just knew it wasn't good.
"It'll be okay, Darry. It'll all be okay..." Soda whispered, his calming and smooth voice comforting. They hated to see Darry like that, they hated that Darry had to go through that, but they felt even more scared for Daisy. They felt pity for how devastated Darry was. They didn't know what to say after that, they only held Darry, letting him cry until there weren't anymore tears to cry.
Soon, they could hear Darry's sobs subside and replaced with steadying breathing, that moment brought the most pity out of the brothers, their brother had just cried himself to sleep. Soda and Pony released from the group hug and lied Darry down on the bed, covering him with the blanket that somehow was forgotten.
"Go get everyone else." Soda said, his blue eyes meeting Pony's emerald green ones. With a swift nod, Ponyboy left the room and down the hallway. He walked up to the four boys and motioned for them to follow him. Dally shot up and took the task of leading them to Darry's room. He stopped in front of the door and opened it slowly. They saw Darry asleep in his bed, tears staining his cheeks while his eyes were red from crying himself to sleep. The six members of the gang knew one thing and one thing only that night. This was going to take a tole on Darry, how big no one knew.
