~Previously~
'If I am pregnant than how can I keep up with the twins when they're older? What if I have another set of twins? What if they aren't healthy because it so soon?' Darry had thought like that the entire night, only getting a few hours of sleep.
~Now~
Darry tiredly stood over the bathroom sink staring at the life changer in his hands. The 5 minutes were up, but he didn't know if he could look, he didn't know what to do first. He looked down eventually to see what he feared the most but also expected to see. Those 2 pink lines.
"Positive..." he muttered. He stood there in shock, allowing the new information to sink in. Just then did he realize how much of a challenge the next pregnancy would be. By the time the twins will start walking he'll be waddling around, hardly able to keep up with his son and daughter. He realized how hard it would be late at night when he tried to sleep in a comfortable position because he'd be huge, but he'd have to wake up from the twins needing to be fed or changed. How they hardly had space for the twins, not to mention a third baby when the twins are around a year old. Or how the couple would be able to financially handle it or even emotionally and mentally handle it.
Darry wiped away a single tear that had escaped his eye and begun running down his cheek, he felt so many emotions at once, it was like finding out he was pregnant for the first time all over again.
"How am I going to do this?" Darry muttered to himself, he knew he was only safe for a few more hours. It was 7 in the afternoon which meant he would have to tell Dally when he got home or when he was off the next day, either way he was nervous.
"If Mom and Dad could do it, then I can too." Darry stated to himself, he knew he was right. His parents dealt with 3 crazy and rambunctious boys for years then he could do it, too. It wouldn't be easy but Darry knew he could do it. He made up his mind and decided to tell Dally when he got home at 9.
************
Worry was all he could feel. It was 9:40 and Dally wasn't home while everyone else was either at their own home or the Curtis house.
"Soda, why did you and Steve walk home again?" He questioned. He knew something bad would happen but he tried not to believe it. It was the gut feeling no one can avoid for a long time.
"We waited for Dall but he never showed up. I didn't wanna get jumped so we decided to just walk." Soda shrugged at the end, oblivious to the worrying state his older brother was in. Only the 3 brothers and Johnny were there at the house, though Johnny fell asleep in Pony's bed before he could eat after work.
"I'm sure he's fine, Darry. He's probably caught up in traffic or something. You know how bad it is when you drive in from the country." Pony said. He seemed to be the only person in the house to notice Darry's state, he also noticed how sick he was getting in the mornings again. Pony had a hunch but didn't want to insinuate anything and start drama.
Pony was smart, smarter than Soda in a lot of things but dumber in some. He didn't want his oldest brother to worry as much as he was, he knew Darry would worry himself sick if he kept it up. Pony knew Darry hated getting sick and getting himself sick wouldn't help anything in the moment.
"Ya, I know, Pony. But this is different. It's that gut feeling you can't ignore, and something tells me something good isn't about to happen." Darry responded. He knew what Pony was trying to do and he was thankful for that attempt. Pony was the first to acknowledge his brother's anxiety when the brothers were younger and the youngest brother did a good job at keeping him calm. Darry knew that.
Darry had stopped pacing around the room to sit on the couch next to Soda. He sighed as he placed his head in his hands while his elbows rested on his knees. As Darry began to calm himself, or attempt to. The phone had begun to ring. Confused, Pony was the first to answer as Soda was now half asleep and Darry didn't seem in the best condition to answer the phone.
"Curtis residence." He said while using an average voice. There was silence for a few moments until he set the phone down and rested a hand on Darry's shoulder.
"It's for you Darry, something about Dally." Darry shot up from his seat at the mention of Dally and rushed over to the phone.
"Hello?" He questioned. Darry couldn't help but let some of the worry he felt seep into his tone.
"Is this Darryl Curtis?" A woman's voice spoke.
"This is." Darry said cautiously. "What is this about?"
"Sir, I've been told to inform you that Dallas Winston was in a car accident. He's alive but he's going to be in surgery any minute now. He's been asking for someone. I'm assuming he calls you Darry." She said. Her voice was hard to determine. It wasn't cold, nor sincere. Neither was it sad, nor happy.
Darry stood in shock as he held the phone to his ear. The gut feeling he had didn't only fade away, but so did everything else. He just stood there.
"Thank you, ma'am. I'll be there as soon as possible." He said numbly. He waited for the lady on the other line to hang up before he slowly rested the phone back on it's cradle.
************
Darry sat alone in the waiting room staring at the ring Dally gave him all those months ago. He sat there neck deep in shock, disbelief and worry. A nurse came around the corner in blue scrubs and a surgical cap on her head.
As she made her way to Darry, the boy stood. "How is he?" He questioned. Darry had only 1 thought through his mind as she spoke.
'Why us? Out of all people, why us?'
